CoreVault Backups Powered by Force10 Traverse Switches Customer PROFILE Customer CoreVault Industry Technology Services Provider Application Cloud-based Data Center Highlights Deployed Force10 Traverse switches implementing both BLSR and UPSR SONET network rings CoreVault is a cloud-based storage, backup, and data recovery service based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. With customers in 34 states, CoreVault is recommended by more than 25 professional associations representing more than 500,000 business, legal, and healthcare professionals as a reliable provider of data backup and recovery services via the Internet. CoreVault maintains two private data centers more than 120 miles apart in western Oklahoma. A subsidiary of Dobson Technologies, CoreVault is affiliated with Dobson Telephone, which has provided telecom services in Oklahoma for 75 years. Since its inception, CoreVault has relied on a state-of-the-art OC-192 network backbone powered by Force10 Traverse Multiservice Transport Switches. Traverse products provide a low-latency, low-jitter network with five nines reliability to service critical backup needs for hundreds of companies. Upgrading the Network Backbone The Traverse-based backbone was in place before CoreVault was founded in 2005. Dobson Technologies upgraded to Traverse switches in 2003 to gain bandwidth and flexibility in its OC-192 network. “The network backbone is the very foundation of CoreVault’s transport needs and the transport needs of our customers,” says Raymond Castor, Senior Vice President of IT for CoreVault. When it began deploying Traverse switches, says Castor, “We needed additional bandwidth to keep pace with a very strong and growing customer base. We also had a desire to expand our network, and we chose to upgrade aging technology with more current equipment.” When building out its network upgrade in 2003, Dobson chose Traverse 1600 switches because they bring new levels of versatility, reliability and performance to multiservice transport networks. Traverse switches enable carriers and other service providers to increase bandwidth capacity, packet-optimize their transport networks, and deliver new Ethernet/IP-based services more rapidly and efficiently. With Traverse solutions in place, the Dobson affiliates have gained solid performance, flexibility and scalability in their network backbone. The network is engineered to provide low jitter, low latency, and full protection switching to ensure greater than five nines reliability even if a node goes down. CoreVault Rides on Traverse In 2003, Dobson was looking for a solution to its own backup issues. “We didn’t have a good off-site data recovery solution and were running up against backup windows at night,” says Castor. “CoreVault came about as a way to facilitate backup and remote recovery, and as we got into it, we decided to offer the service to others.” Traverse switches provide not only reliability and performance for CoreVault’s data, but flexible connection capabilities that optimize bandwidth usage. Adding CoreVault to the network has increased overall bandwidth requirements by some 40 percent, but the Traverse switches have provided a strong backbone for enabling highly reliable, cloud-based storage under these higher traffic conditions. Force10 Networks Traverse 1600 Switch “When people experience data loss and need to do restorations and we start to put pressure on our backbone, we need to have world-class partners in place that can help us deliver world-class service. As we move into more cloud-based services such as hosting services, private clouds, and even hybrid clouds, there will be more opportunities for the company, but also more dependence on companies like Force10 to facilitate 24/7 services on the back end that have to be up and running with no downtime.” “We can’t afford to be down, not in the world we live in, and not in the services we provide, especially when you’re dealing with businesses’ data – their most valuable asset,” says Castor.
