A clean room is generally an environment that has a low level of environmental pollutants such as dust, airborne microbes, aerosol
particles and chemical vapours. The specification is often classified by the level of contamination which is defined by the number of
particles per cubic metre at a specified particle size. In a typical urban exterior environment the air contains 35,000,000 particles per
cubic metre in the size range 0.5 μm and larger in diameter. This is equivalent to a ISO 9 clean room, while an ISO 1 clean room allows

no particles in that size range and only 12 particles per cubic meter of 0.3 μm and smaller.
C.I.B.S.E LG2 (Lighting Guide 2 for Hospitals and Healthcare) is currently under review though the recommendations are still valid.
Certain recommended illuminance levels have been superseded by BSEN 12464-1 Light and Lighting. Lighting of work places.
