SoccerSpecific.com Session Plan: Academy Turning Session ACTIVITY #1 Set up: Set up two goals facing opposite directions apprx 15 yds apart. Set up two lines with balls in the middle. Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: Coach plays a ball between the two goals and 1 player from each team runs out to try to win the ball. Once the ball is won, the attacking player can score on either goal. Keep score and then progress to 2v2. Coaching Points: 1. Get to the ball quickly and protect it. 2. If one goal gets blocked by a defender, attack the other one. 3. Use quick turns and change of speed to "fool" the defender. ACTIVITY #2 Set up: In an area approx 15x15 yds, set up 2 goals on each corner. Set up 2 teams one on each corner. Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: Coach plays out a ball and players can score on either goal. Keep score and progress to 2v2. Coaching Points: 1. Players need to use quick turns and change of speed to beat players. 2. Use turns to "fool" the defensive player. 3. If the defender blocks one goal, turn and go to the other. ACTIVITY #3 Set up: Set up a square 15x15yds with one cone in the middle. 2 Players pn each corner. Each group of two players has one ball. Instructions: The first players in line will all dribble to the cone, conduct a move and then play back to their partner in line who will then conduct the move and play back to the waiting partner. Coaching Points: 1. Inside foot turn 2. Outside foot chop turn 3. Sole of the foot. 4. Cruyff (behind the leg inside foot chop) 5. Other creative turns 6. The players should keep a rythem with the other players so everyone is going at the same time. Play is directional with teams attacking two goals and defending two. Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: Play 4v4 or 5v5 depending on your numbers. Players should be looking to use the space and switch the point of attack with an across field pass. Also encourage them to combine with give and go's and overlapping runs. They should finish with a good pass into the goal. Coaching Points: 1. Proper passing and receiving technique. 2. "See" the game and "find the space." 3. Counter attack quickly when winning the ball. ACTIVITY #5 Set up: 4 Goal Cross Game. Set up a field approx 35x35 yds square. Set up a goal on each side of the square. Split teams into 4v4 or 5v5. Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: Start by teams being able to score on any goal. Then have them defend 2 goals and attack two goals. Coaching Points: 1. What play is "on"? 2. Players need to turn quickly to find open space. 3. Players need to change pace to exploit space. ACTIVITY #6 Set up: Set up an approx. 30x40 yd field with a goal on each end. Split up teams evenly. If you can play 4v4 that is ideal, but 6v6 is fine too. Coach is master of the balls. Instructions: Just let them play Coaching Points: Focus on quick turns, using the space, and changing the point of attack.
