Textile industry: skill training project
being launched throughout country

Federal government would launch a skill training project for 120,000 people in the textile industry throughout Pakistan at an
estimated cost of Rs 4.4 billion, it is learnt. According to the sources, Ministry of Textile Industry is the sponsoring agency of the
project with a life of five years. The project will provide training to 120,000 men and women (age limit 18 to 35 years) across the
textile value chain to equip the workforce with high standards of skill in the areas of quality stitching, pattern making and cutting,
quality assurance and packaging as well as machine mechanics and other need based training.
The main objective of the training programme is to provide skilled workforce to textile industry and make it more competitive in
the world market. The sources said textile sector in Pakistan had an overwhelming impact on the economy, contributing 54
percent to the country's exports; but the sector needed to upgrade its supply chain, improve productivity, and maximise valueaddition
to
be
able
to
survive.
The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the project and referred it to the Executive Committee of
National Economic Council (Ecnec) for final decision. The sources said the CDWP approved that project. The Ministries of
Textile Industry and Commerce argued that the project was needed to link it with the new textile policy and its objectives.
The private sector and textile industries are the main beneficiaries and would share the cost with the commitment to
accommodate the trainees through proper arrangements with training institutions. According to documents, available
with Business Recorder, there is provision of Rs 20 million for vehicle, Rs 3 million for furniture and fixtures and Rs 3 million
for computers.
