Entered at the Poet Office at Tom* Hitter, a.» lecond-clan* mail matter. They have some queer ideas in N ew York os well as elsewhere. A gentleman o f Texas, whoso loveliness of character is vouched for by a ll tho sheriffs, busi ness men and lawyers of that flowery land, as well as by no less a personage than the Governor o f the State himself, hearing that a N ew York swindler was offering to sell ten thousand dollars o f counterfeit money fo r five hundred o f good, but that the ten thousand offered and pretended to be sold was really good money, determined to come on to N ew York and swindle th e swindler out o f that cash or die in th e attempt. Accord ingly he raised the requisite fivo hundred, provided himself with snoh artillery as he regarded necessary— for he know that to get the money he would have to souffle for it and in a ll probability would have to shoot or b e shot—and in due time arrived at bis destination. T h e shooting part of his anticipations were realized; for when he attempted to carry off the ten thousand dollars, of course, resistance was offered, and he applied the Texas solution to the diffi culty by killing the man he was attempting to rob. W ell, although he admitted killing hiB man, the " intelligent ju ry” brought him in “ not guilty,” ou the ground of self-defence, probubly ; though there was not tho slightest evidence that tho life of anybody but the murdered man was at anytime in tho least danger. I f this Texas murderer is a fair speci men of " a man of excellent reputation,” as is understood down iu hiB native land, then, certainly, the standard has not beon fixed too high for hnman attain ment. And if he was acquitted, as many think, beoauso his victim was & worthless swindler, tho fact ought to be rather depressing to tho fraternity dovotod to gaining a livelihood by their wits. But then they will oonsider that the Now York jury of the “ highly intelligent ” variety has rathor a prepossession for man-killers anyway, and tho reflection will cheer them up again. A bill has been introduced in tho New York Legislature, in harmony with tho recommendation o f Governor H ill, providing for the establishment of Couuty Boards of Arbitration to settle all labor difficulties. Tho boards are to consist of five persons, two chosen by laborers, two by employees, and tho fifth by tho four just named ; and these are afterward to be licensed by tho Judge of tho Court and permitted to summon and examine witnesses under oath, and determiuo matters in dispate. A State Board of three persons, ono to be selected by workingmen, is also provided for, to determine flnnlly appeals from the decision of local Boards. Local Boards are not to be paid fo r their service except items of necessary expense incurred, but the State Board is to be provided with an adequate salary, fixed in the bill at $3,000. Appeals must be made from the decision of the local Boards within ten days. It is said this sebemo meets with favor both on the p art o f employers and labor organizations. The Blair Educational bill passed the U. S. Senate last week, and there seems to be reason to believe that it will pass the House. While there may be arguments in favor of the general govern ment’a extending aid to States iu somo oases for the promotion o f their educational interests, yet there is a strong belief prevailing throughout the laud iu the “ States Rights " doctrine of each State's educating its people itaelf, and not calling upon tho others for aid raised direotly or indirectly by taxation. A t any rate there onght to be a protest made against that atyie of Congressional statistics assuming that every child in the land not attending a public school when entitled to do so is therefore growing np in ignoranoe, and needing the paternal oare o f the government. N o measure is worthy o f support if it depends for strength on falsehood and misrepresentation. Hon. James Buchanan, of this Con gressional district, introduced in the House of Representatives ou Monday a bill “ to iucrease the efficiency of the Life-Siving S ervice,” which provides that the servioe shall be divided into two classes : " station-guards " and “ patrol men,” each station to be provided with a keeper, six surfmen and three stationguards. The station-gnsrds are to be appointed, upon tb e recommendation o f the keeper, from among snoh members of the crew as have been disabled from active service either by age or injuries ceived in the service. The compensation of tho station-guards is to be fixed at a snm not to exceed tbe amount now paid to the surfmen. W e understand that tbe bill has received the endorsement of M r. Kimball, Superintendent of the L ife Saving Service. A number o f ou r New Jersey oon temporaries have fallen into the error o f accrediting Judge Green, of this State, with the paternity o f tbe bill introdneed by Hon. Jamee Buchanan, in the House o f Representatives, recently, as men tioned in these columns last week, providing pensions for the widows and minor orphans of enca members of tbs Life-Saving Service as low their lives in tbe performance of their duty, f t . , _______ .. , been dweorered that a amah smaller * ....N £ Mr. Isaac C. Among the last researches he un earthed a quaint aud interesting specimen in nn original conveyance from the Iudians for the lands about Deal Lake, to Garvin Drummond, a descendant of the Scottish Earl of Melford. The graut was given in tbe name and behalf of tbe Governor and Proprietors o f East Jersey and signed by Wee Wanaman, Waltham Mansekaman and Waynma* tnce, chief sachems, with the consent of the rest o f the Indians. The lands were generally described as lying within the branoheB of Great Pond, called l>y the Indians Wickapecko. A h is generally known, the East Jersey Proprietors required purchasers to socure a title from the Iudiaus before taking possession. The payment for this valuable messuage was one gnn, five match coats, ono kottle and twft pounds of powder. Tbe document was dated April 6tb, IQ&l.— Aabury P a rk Journal. W e believe that labor and capital oan only b e prosperous when they work together for a common purpoae. Capital must hove remunerative investment; labor should have its full reward. Differences between tbe two oan always be settled by impartial arbitration. I f labor boycotts capital, capital may, for its own protection, tarn tbe very weapons that labor has used against the laboring classes. Capital would not, it is true, receive its interest, but it could offord to do without it. Labor would, iu turn, lose its hire, which it not only could not do without, but would entail upon the families o f the laborers great inconvenience, if not posi tive distress. This is simply a matter of business and should bo treated from a business standpoint. Labor organizations were not origtaally designed for auy other purpose than to protect their members from tbe tyranny that capital iu the hands of uuwise aud illiberal men is sometimes disposed to exert upon individuals. Labor associations demand fair wag-ezand capital accedes to the demand because it is fair. So long as that understanding is re spected by both parties, capital and labor are really copartners. When, in many cases, where there is a dissolution o f this copartnership, it is brought about by grasping capitalists or lazy, revolutionary, so-called laborers, who live by agitation and have the same dislike to honest, consecutive labor that the devil has for holy water. Capital always seeks investment where good order prevails, and where there is a law-abiding people. I t shrinks and withdraws itself from mobocracy and internecine brawls. eaoe and quiet are as essential to the laboring man ns they are to capital. They are more so, for they involve the employment of labor, and, what is more important, tbe protection of the homes of the laborer. Capital oan easily be removed from one centre to another, and And investments awaiting its arrival. Not so with labor. I t oan only change its looation under the most favorable circumstance, and then it often finds itself iu a strange place, and waits for weeks or months for employment that cannot be had, all o f whiob loss falls heavily upon tbe laborer and his family. Labor associations do not require that their members shall neglect their work to spy out wliat olass of goods tbe mer chants or manufacturers sell. They expect every member to attend to his own business, aud thus by industry aud frugality to add that true dignity to labor that wins not only the confidence aud esteem of the employer but of all good persons whose opinions are worth having. —D anville Register. An apology for the hasty and inoom* P-Pte make-up of the paper thiB week, '' ill be at the same time an announce ment that will be received by our readers with pain and regret. Mr. S. 0. C. train in Before leaving the at Camden, he became ill but maunged with great difficulty to keep his feet and make his way to the ferry, and crossed to Philadelphia. up Market St., until He continued obliged to ask for assistance, and was taken to the store of Russel, Campbell & Co., where he was acquainted. Mr. Russel had him re moved to his boarding house at N o. 315 Market St., CamdeD, and immediately summoned medical aid—Drs. H unt and M iddleton— when it was discovered that he had sustained a paralytic seizure, o f a severe nature. On her arrival from Washington, Mrs. Jennings was taken to the bedside of the sufferer. On Monday morniug there waB a second exhibition of cerebral hemorrhage, the paralysis ex tending to the entire left side of the body. Although the situation has been preca rious, at latest accounts there seemed considerable improvement in the condition of the patient, and hopes are entertained that he may be soon able to be removed to bis homo in this village. I t looks at present aa though great changes and improvement w ill be made on Long Beaoh in the course of a few years, and whero there is not a habitaion for miles, cities w ill be bnilt up and thousands o f people from our inland cities will be likely to oome and spend their time, as this will be their shortest route to the sea; and people living in the different villages on the main will find employment as meohanics, yaohtemen, fishermen, truokers and laborers of all kinds. The work on the Long Beach Rail* road has n ot been progressing as rapidly as was expected at the commencement of Winter, in consequence of the severity of the weather the last two mouths, which oaused the workmen to abaudon the work for several days at a time. There are about fifty men engaged at present on the bridge across the bay ; and now that Spring has oome, with its prospects of more favorable weather, the work will be pushed forward to completion ns /ast aa possible. The young people connected with the M. E. Church gave a concert in the lecture room on Wednesday evening last, consisting o f dialogues, recitations and singing accompanied by the organ and oornet. T h e latter was played by Harry Cooke, one o f the members o f Cedar Run Cornet Band. A ll that took part in the concert were h ighly complimented. Rev. T . 8. Parker, pastor of the M. E. Church, oloBed his relation as pastor of this charge on Sunday, March 7th. Mr. Parker has not enjoyed good health during the past year, and does not feel able to return to preach three times during the Sabbath, consequently a new minister w ill be expected to take his place. Certain parties have purchased a tract of laud south-west o f the village, formerly owned by the late N. B. Jen Dings, M . 1)., with the intention o f running a track through it, as it has excellent material upou it for use in improving their properties on the beaoh. Mr. John Willetts gave a lecture in the Baptist Church on Saturday evening ; subject, “ Science and its achievement.” B arnegat Items* The schooner Elisha Qibhs arrived at N orfolk, Ya., last Thursday morning, having on hoard Gapt. Garret, Lippinoott, o f this town, and crew o f six men of the schooner Leona, bound from N ew York to W est Point with phosphate. The Leona sailed from Delaware Breakwater March 1st, and at night was oaugbt in a severe northerly gale and grounded ou H og Island Shoale, T b e oaptain and orow were taken from the wrecked sohooner by the H og Island life-saving orew, bnt owing to the heavy sea and strong gale they were uuable to reach the shore aud drifted near the sohooner Elisha Gibbs, whioh was riding at anohor about six miles off Smith’s Island. They were taken on board in an exhausted ooudition, some of the meu having hands aud feet frostbitten. Tbe Leona has been abandoned and is a total wreck. Hugh Bird, of Tuckerton, who was employed by Banj. Predmore a short distance from this town, coaling, died quite suddenly in the cabin ou the eveniug o f the 2nd iust. Mr. B ird was taken with oramps iu the m in in g and the doctor wob called, but did not seem to relieve him. In rising to step to the door, about 5 p , m ., he fell dead, body was taken to Tuckerton on Wednes day morning. W e heard o f rather unoharitable remarks being made about Bame^atters iu reference to this matter. W e w ill not go into details now, but simply say thar, before blame is attached to anyone, inquiry should be made as to who is to blame. Charity begins at home. T h e band and “ horse-fiddle ” tendered the usual complimentary serenade to Mr. Chas. S. Hollinshead and Miss M aggie Erriokaon, whose marriage was announced last week. Allow us, through the Courier, to tender our congratulations and wishes of success. The newly married couple w ill in the fnture reside at Mercban tvillc, N. J. Enooh S. Jones, one of our old residents, but who has lately resided at Barnegat City, died here on March 4th, in the sixty-first year of hia age. Mr. Joues has always been identified with all prominent movements in this section. To his widow and five children, who are left to mourn his loss, we tender our sympathies in this bereavement. On Monday last JesBe Burdsall, one of our famous gunners, succeeded in killing one hundred and fifteen ducks— fifty-four of which were red-heads. Mr. Burdsall informs us that he used a muzzle-loading gun, did not g et on the ground until about 10 A. m ., end quit about 3 p. m. He says he shot many that he was unable to gather. On Thursday morning, March 4th, Lorenzo Brown, one of the section gang on the N. J. S. R. R ., had his toes badly smashed by a bar of iron falling on them. Extra meetings have been in progress in the M. E. Church during the past two weeks, and many have joined the church ou probation. D iamond, Jackson Tow nship Notes. T h e township convention o f Jaokson was held at James Y. Hyers’ last Friday. The candidates nominated were Jonathan Clayton for Collector ; Conover Matthews for Assessor; James Moore for Con stable, and Jos. Clayton for Committee. It is thought that after all tbe exoitemeut there w ill be no opposition. Judicial Reform . That judicial reform Is very much needed is a matter of foot admitted by all intelligent observers o f the workings of our present system o f administering justice. But the difficult point seems to be tbs waut o f agreement as to tbe ex tent and obaraoter o f the amendments required. Some lawyers are in favor of this, and others o f that plan, while the judges, as long aa they wear the robes of judioial office aud draw their liberal salaries, seem to look with disfavor on any system lest they may be required, to some extent, to do a little more work or aooapt a little less pay. Tbo time haa oome, however, when it is clear that something must be done to lessen tbe expense and delay o f litigation. I t is an undeniable faot that law suits multiply with the growth aud prosperity of society and oauuot be fr.Lteu rid of. Wherever there is au abundance of busi ness there are plenty o f differences and disputes that require the aid of lawyers aud oourta to pesoeably settle, sod it is oue of the highest duties o f s State to furnish its subjects with tbe moet ap proved and best system for tbe adminis tration of justioe. But those who have addressed themselveo to the tasV o f im proving our system have found it no easy thing to interest tbe people’s representa tives in the Legislature on the subjeot. I f one gets to Trenton in the interest of some powerful corporation seeking a valuable franchise ss a g ift from the people’s representatives, he has little trouble to interest them iu his projeot, but if he goes to the same members with a well-devised plan fo r the amendment and improvement of our judicial system, in the interest of the whole people, he is treated as a bore aud given a bearing accordingly. Last winter a well-digested scheme for reconstructing onr judiciary was laid before the Legislature, aud re ceived nothing like the atteutiou it mer ited aud which it received everywhere outside of the legislative chambers. The time is ripe for something to be doue in this matter. Our courts need to be reconstructed from the top to the bottom. A court of errors and appeals consisting o f sixteen judges, six of whom never opened a law book before their appointment to the beuch, is a judioial monstrosity nowhere to be seen outside of this State. The supreme courts of mauy of the States oousist of only three or four judges. The supreme court of the United States, tbe greatest tribunal in the world, in the variety, extent and importance o f its business, consists of but nine judges. Most States are content with a supreme court as a court of last resort, but here we have not only a court of errors and appeals as the last resort in all causes, but we have also a supreme court com posed of nine law judges who decide causes upon the principles o f tho English common law, and a high court of chancery, held by a chanoellor assisted by two vice-chancellors, who decide causes according to the equitable princi ples o f the civil law. And it not infre quently happens, under this dual system, that after a plaintiff succeeds in recover ing a judgment iu the supreme court by tedious and expensive litigation, the defendant goes in the court of chancery and on different priuoiples obtains an injunction restraining the plaintiff from enforcing his judgment. New Jersey, Delaware aud Tennessee are about the only States that still cling to the obsolete system o f two kinds o f courts administering justioe according to different and oonfiioting principles. England, from whioh it w b b borrowed, has long since abolished it. No wonder that Lord Chief-Justice Coleridge, when he was in this country, laughed at the obaraoter o f onr system o f oourts. H e had a just right to do so. They m erit ridioule, and so do tbe people who suffer them to remain as they are. E very barrier to simple, inexpensive and speedy justioe must be thrown down and the senseless superfluities and embarasaiug technicalities of the law must be made to go into history with tbe black letter hooks of the law. In every oounty we want a court— held by a non practicing lawyer of ability, experience and integrity— always open with jurisdiction to try all causes arising in the oounty according to one and tbe same oode or set of legal principles, and from whose decision there shall be but oue appeal direct to au appellate court consisting o f five judges who sit in d o other tribnnal. As it is now we have in every county from three to five judges, the majority of whom, to say the least, are absolutely without any proper qualification for tbe place. Iu the oonrt of chancery matters are quite as bad, aud it is a common oomplaiut all over tbe State that the trial o f equity cases i d that court is much too slow and expensive. W e understand that tbe Camden County Bar Association will urge tbia scheme upon the atten tion o f the Legialatature against this winter, and our request to our members is to give them a bearing and do some thing to simplify, cheapen and render more speedy the administration o f justice in our oourtf.— Camden Courier. County should k n ow that w e can Large and Small Swine. show the largest v a rie ty o f plain, Large white pigs have always been very popular in England, where bacon and hams are largely con sumed. We have imported into this country good pigs o f some of these breeds, which have made a good reputation, and among them the best known is, perhaps the Large York shire. The name, however, is not absolutely distinctive, for the large white breed it not peculiar to any speoial county in England, where the large Yorkshire, Lancashire and Lincolnshire pigs are all classed aB the large white breed. These three counties adjoin each other, and there is really no essential difference between the pigs o f several localities, except as individual breeders take pains with their herds. This race of swine, which is popular in that part o f England, has been much im proved of late veare, although the writer, when in tLat country as long as thirty years ago, mot with many animals which weighed from seven hundred to nine hundred pounds, and these were considered nothing unusual as to size. A good deal has bcjn said and written of late o f early maturing p ig s; animals which will reach a profitable weight at nino months old. But it is altogether a matter of fancy as to whether an animal should woigk throe hundred pounds at nine or ten months, or three times that weight at three times that age. Certainly there is something in the uses to be made of pork, which has an influence upon the manner Of feeding the animals and it would not do to have all the pigs of a very largo sizo For some uses, largo sides and hams are desirable, and it is beyond question that the meat o f a fully matured pig has some qualities which mako it preferable to that o f a pig forced to great Weight boforo its muscles have been matured. F o r some purposes fat is more desirable than loan, but generally “ a streak o f fat and a streak of lean ” in pork, makes it most desirable for food. The largo English broods have this peculiarity, and on that account are preferred by many feeders.— American Agricultur ists. printed and hand-painted T ea, D in ner, Silver and Chamber Sets in the city o f Philadelphia. Those it iB necessary to somotimos chock up high, so as to make them lift their feet, and besides, if they do trip, the chock rein punishes them Boverely. Stumbling is chiefly duo to bad shoeing; hence this use of tho chock, savors o f needless cruelty. I f a horse shows a tendency to Stumble, pull o ff his shoes and drive him barefoot, being careful not to break his hoofs. IIo will soon got over the tendency in ull probability. When the feet wear, if they do, so as to necessitate shoeing, if it is summer Weather put on toe clips only, and ronow thorn often. The check rein is used to make a naturally down headed horse carry his head high, or as high as his mate, and it is often made an instrument of wanton torture, by unfeeling grooms and drivers. The real use of tho check is to prevent a horse gotting his head to tho ground when standing. I t is of no use at all, except ns above explained, when traveling. W here this important point is overlooked, the mass of the obimney stack will settle and draw away from that part supported by the ro o t timbers, and thus leave a dangerous opening at an unfrequented spot. AH classes o f chimneys and flues should have each course o f brick well and evenly bedded in good mortar, and each joint be as carefully pointed inside of the flue as if the work was being (lone on a pressed brick front. This class o f finish is better and safer than the usual method o f plastering the inside of a flue, as under the in fluence o f the changes from beat to cold the plaster is liable to drop off and carry with it a share o f the mortar, thus leaving a weak spot. Flues not built from the ground should rest on good timber supports, and have not less than six courses of solid brick work at the base, well bedded and crosstied in good mortarFlues built in attics or on joists, with stove pipe entering them vertically, are very dangerous, and their presence should condemn the risk at once. All timbers and woodwork exposed to chimneys and flues should be framed around them, leaving a two-inch air space. A propitious time for tho enforcement of these suggestions is that offerod when buildings are about to be erected, and i f properly presented to the party at interest, will frequently be adopted. T ry it, and when inspect ing risks, either as new or old business, keep a sharp eye open to discover and remedy defects, as it ia upon your judgment and care in such matters that we must in a very great measure rely for a proper selection o f business. M a t c h e s . — The careless use o f matches is of such general occurence that frequent caution ns to the danger from such cause cannot come amiss, howevor often reiterated. Metal receptacles should be insisted upon for both burned iind unburned matches, and care be taken to keep them out o f the reach o f children and mice. In the hands of children they are dangerous from tho ignorance and inexperience of the users, while with mice they seem to form a dainty addition to their regular diet, and are frequently found imbedded in their nests, with the phosphorus oaten from the ends. Tlie disuse o f the so-called “ parlor match,” a dangerous article, and tho more general use of safety matches, such as can be ignited only on boxes pre pared for the purpose, should bo encouraged on all fitting occasions.
