IEEE Croatia Section - PES OCA Submission, 2014
The Croatia chapter of the IEEE PES has been actively promoting power and energy to students, and
junior engineers (GOLD) as part of our activities. These activities include arranging tours of power
engineering companies for undergraduate students, advocating new power engineering courses at
local universities and promoting closer relationships between the Croatia chapter of the PES and the
student chapter.
All meetings were well attended with IEEE members and, perhaps, our prospective future members.
The Croatia PES Chapter has worked closely together with other IEEE Section chapters for mutual
benefits. This cooperation has resulted in high quality technical, educational, social and professional
programs. Above all the Croatian PES Chapter maintains engagement to promote IEEE values in
several Universities in Croatia, mainly Universities of Zagreb, Osijek, Rijeka and Split.

2.d - Student Activities
The majority of students that participate in the Student Branch activities on the University of Zagreb
come from power engineering background. In year 2014 due to promotion of IEEE Values 30 new
members enrolled.
All the students have free admission for most of the activities within Chapter. They are a significant
part of all Chapter activities, including conference organization and organization of technical
activities. PES student Chapter members were of significant value in organization of IEEE Energycon
2014 conference and were assisting in communication with speakers and other participants. Majority
of students in IEEE Croatia branch are perspective future members. We supported formation of a

9
IEEE Croatia Section - PES OCA Submission, 2014
Meetings of PES Student Branch Zagreb (http://www.ieee.hr/ieee/chapter/pes) were held every
week during the academic year. Members of the PES Zagreb were participating actively in
organization of the LabVIEW course, software package of company National Instruments. LabVIEW
course started on 10th March and was performing during four weeks on Mondays and Thursdays. All
students who successfully passed the exam have been awarded with so-called CLAD certificate.
These training and accreditation courses are usually attended by industry employees with
corresponding course fees but our PES Chapter ensured they are held for free for our graduate
students. Furthermore, PES chapter organized study visit to the nuclear power plant Krško in Slovenia
on the 23th May 2014. The operation of the nuclear power plant was demonstrated to students,
theoretical knowledge was given by professor Grgic and practical knowledge was given by the worker
of the nuclear power plant. In cooperation with the Student Branch held two actions of membership
enlargement (about 30 new members joined as stated before). Eight members of PES participated in
the 4th congress of student branches Croatian section (CroSBC - Croatian Student Branch Congress)
international organization IEEE, which was held at the Rijeka Faculty of Engineering In December our
PES chapter participated in the Christmas charity (selling cakes and so collected donations for a
family of a single mother of twelve children).

2.e - Affinity Groups (WIE, GOLD, etc.)
We organized technical lecture for the GOLD members (PhD students). The presentation given by
Prof. Maciel Barbosa from INESC PORTO (Dean of Faculty) consisted of two parts. In first part Prof.
Barbosa gave an inside about the advantages of engineering carrier/doctoral study that offers
opportunities for students exchange and broadening of perspectives. In second part he has share his
research and experience connected with wind power plants maintenance which is very developed
field of study in University of Porto.
This is the field the PES Chapter of the Croatia section can make biggest improvements. Connect
more with the Young Professional activities and bear in mind importance of WIE activities and relate
to them and organize new activities in cooperation.
During the 2015 we plan to send a few IEEE PES Young Professionals on 3 months specialization to
China, upon return they will present research results to other Young Professionals at the IEEE Elevate
