industry +tech news 11 1 Lifetime Achievement Award The IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES) Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2007 to recognize exceptional power engineers for outstanding career-long contributions to the art and science of electric power engineering. The inaugural recipient of this new award is one of the most active members of the protection and control community - Stanley Horowitz. The citation for the award states that it is given to him “for leadership in the field of power system protection with a consistently high level of innovative contributions to the art of relaying during a career spanning 50 years”. Stan started his career in 1950 at American GAS & Electric (which later became American Electric Power Service Corp. (AEP)). He retired in 1989 as a Consulting Electrical Engineer. Throughout his career Stan was not only involved in engineering projects for AEP – he also actively participated and held leadership positions in the work of national and international professional organizations. He is past Chairman of the IEEE PES Power Systems Relaying Committee and Member of the IEEE PES Executive Board, as well as past Chairman of CIGRE Study Committee 34 – Protection and Control. Stan is also a Life Fellow of the IEEE and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1995. Stan Horowitz also worked hard on sharing his knowledge with several generations of protection and control engineers through books and as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE PES magazine “Computer Applications in Power”, as well as a lecturer at universities in the United States and around the world.
