Distinguished Concerts Artist Series DIANDIAN WU East‐West Fusion: In Perfect Harmony Piano & Authentic Chinese Instruments SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10 at 7:30pm Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall | New York, NY For Immediate Release, October 17, 2011, New York, NY …. Distinguished Concerts Artists New York (DCINY) proudly presents Diandian Wu in East‐West Fusion: In Perfect Harmony, a vibrant and varied program featuring piano and authentic Chinese instruments. Part of DCINY’s Distinguished Artist Series, the performance takes place for one night only at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall on Saturday, December 10 at 7:30pm. Born in Beijing and now based in New York City, Mr. Wu has designed an eclectic program encompassing classical works for piano alongside music for erhu, gaohu, and jinghu ‐‐ all Chinese string instruments. Chopin’s “Heroic” Polonaise in A‐flat major, Op. 53, will be heard alongside contemporary piano works such as Canon, George Winston’s reworking of Pachelbel’s famous work, and music by well‐known Japanese film composer Joe Hisaishi. Wu himself has arranged a condensed version of Chengzong Yin’s Yellow River Piano Concerto, perhaps the most well‐known Chinese concerto ‐‐ a powerful juxtaposition of eastern and western music. Wu will perform on the erhu and bass erhu in selections from Chinese films and for adaptations of Chinese folksongs. Night Thoughts, from the Beijing Opera “Farewell My Concubine” will be performed on jinghu solo and two famous Guangdong compositions are performed on the gaohu: Rising Higher Step by Step and the pentatonic scale‐based Silver Cloud in a Moon Night. Wu is joined by Guangyi Zhang for the immensely popular Chinese song, The Moon Represents My Heart, and by emcee Yinuo Wang, who will add some insight and background ‐‐ in English and Chinese ‐‐ to each work. Born in Beijing in 1986, Wu holds a Master of Arts degree in Chinese literature and art from Columbia University. As a pianist, he took first place in the 2004 Chinese National Piano Competition out of a field of 400. In 2008 Wu released the CD, "Dancing with Literature and Music ‐ Diandian Wu's Accomplishments Album of Chinese Literature and Music." Recent performance highlights include Chopin's Polonaise at Carnegie Hall and a jinghu solo performance at Harvard University's Sanders Theater where the audience of more than 1,200 responded with enthusiasm. World Journal remarked that Wu’s "performance was superb.” Now in its 4th Season, Distinguished Concerts International New York is driven by passion, innovative vision, and unwavering commitment to bringing forth unforgettable audience experiences.
