This yellowing can be accelerated by the absence of UV light and the presence of ammonia. The absence of light effect is commonly seen inside wardrobes and when cavity sliding doors are kept inside the cavity. The most common source of ammonia in this instance is from water based paints and some cleaning chemicals. Yellowing can be minimized by ensuring there is adequate ventilation during the drying period of the enamel paint and that waterbased paints have dried thoroughly before enamels are used. Further information can be obtained from http://www.apmf.asn.au/documents/prolonglife oflightcolouredenamels.html Chalking: The curing process that results in the hardness of enamel paints is susceptible to breakdown when exposed to UV light. In exterior applications enamels tend to lose gloss and become powdery or chalky. When repainting the chalk needs to be removed by sanding or washing with a scourer prior to the application of fresh paint. For a chalk resistant finish use acrylic paints instead of enamel paints. While gloss enamels will provide higher initial gloss, acrylics will provide longer gloss retention, longer life, and easier recoating (less preparation needed). FINISHING Apply two even coats of Haymes Newlife High Gloss Enamel by roller, brush or spray. Where multiple coats are required, light sanding between coats is recommended. Clean equipment with Haymes Mineral Turpentine immediately after use. PAINTING CONDITIONS Do not apply if the temperature is below 10°C. While in hot weather, avoid painting in direct sunlight. STORAGE Protect from extremes of temperature. Store between 5°C and 30°C. MAINTENANCE Protect the coating against abrasive contact for 7 days. In dusty or high use areas, wash down periodically with a mild detergent solution to refresh and preserve the coating. THINNING & CLEAN UP Should be applied unthinned. If thinning is required use approximately 50ml per litre of Haymes Mineral Turpentine. For spray application, use up to 100ml per litre (10%). Protect Our Environment: DO NOT pour left over product down the drain. Retain it in a marked sealed container for future use or disposal via chemical waste collection programs. Dried empty containers can be recycled and should be disposed of via council recycling facilities. Do not re-use empty containers. For best results, preparation is vitally important. When repainting always ensure that the adhesion of old paint is sound before proceeding. Exterior enamels have a tendency to chalk over a period of time. Oil based enamels yellow with age, particularly in the absence of natural light. Rapid yellowing is possible in poorly ventilated areas if ammonia (from household chemicals and water based paints) is present.
