Sand all gloss and semi gloss finishes to a dull finish, remove all chalky paint by sanding. Wash with Haymes Unikleen diluted with water to remove all dirt, grease and mould. For severe mould growth clean with a 10% hypochlorite bleach solution. Rinse with clean water. Fill nail holes, cracks and imperfections with Haymes Unifill (not Haymes linseed Oil Putty). Sand smooth and dust down. Prime metal areas with the appropriate primer. Any areas of greyed timber should be sanded back to sound timber and spot primer with Haymes Wood Primer White of Haymes Acrylic Timber Primer. Apply one coat of Haymes Tricoat to old enamel paint. New Timber: Fill imperfections with Haymes Unifill (not Linseed Oil Putty). Apply three coats of Haymes Low Sheen Solashield. For tannin rich timbers apply one coat Acrylic Timber Primer or White Wood Primer. Preprimed timber: Use of pre-primed timber is becoming more common for exterior use. These primers are of variable quality and while some are high quality primers ready for the application of finishing coats, some are intended only as temporary coatings during the construction period and are not suitable for painting. Haymes recommend removal of the primer before application of finish coats. To determine if the primer is suitable for painting test the adhesion of the primer to the timber. Cut a small “x” through the existing coating with a sharp blade. Press adhesive tape firmly across the cut and then rip off the tape. If any of the existing coating comes off it is unsound and must be removed by sanding. If in any doubt sand the surface before painting. Masonry, Fibro, Brick: Fill imperfections, with Haymes Unifill, sand smooth and dust down. Apply Haymes Low Sheen Solashield directly to surface. Galvanised Iron: Degrease new galvanised iron. Weathered (no shine) galvanised iron with a mild detergent solution and rinse with clean water. Apply one coat of Haymes Acrylic Galvanised Iron Primer to weathered galvanised iron to guard against white rust. Allow 4 hours before re-coating. Note: this product is not suitable for paving or contact surfaces. New Steel. Wrought Iron: Remove all rust by scraping, sanding or using Haymes Derustit. Apply two coats of Haymes Metal Primer Grey allowing 16 hours to dry between coats. Roofing: Prepare surfaces according to label instructions for pre-painted surfaces or galvanised iron. Remove all rust by scraping and sanding. Treat rust areas with Haymes Derustit. If collecting rainwater disconnect pipes for TWO good Rains. FINISHING Apply two coats of Low Sheen Solashield.
