Fighting alongside the most unexpected ally, Thor slowly understands the meaning of being king of his world… A year after Marvel's The Avengers, an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Malekith is leader of the dark elves, who inhabit Svartalfheim, one of the Nine Realms. After waging war with the Nine Realms, and being defeated by Asgard, the dark elves were considered to be extinct. But Malekith put his planet and the surviving dark elves into hibernation for many thousands of years, until a calculated time when he was ready to seek revenge against the universe and turn light once more into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) decides to form an uneasy, desperate alliance with Loki (Tom Hiddleston), his adoptive brother, who was taken back to Asgard by Thor as a prisoner after Marvel's The Avengers. Thor also reunites with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) by bringing her to Asgard from Earth. As Thor begins to understand the responsibilities, burdens and sacrifices he must suffer to be king, he embarks on his most difficult and personal journey, which forces him to sacrifice everything to save the universe.
