2 – APPLICATION

APPLICATION

[ 1 ] What should I do before Painting?

a. Read the directions on each aerosol can. Dulux Duramax products outline instructions to ensure optimum results. Generally, you should prepare the surface by removing dirt, grease, rust, wax, moisture and loose paint. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of contaminants.

[ 2 ] Is much skill is required for good results?

a. No. Read the directions carefully and practice spraying on an old carton or box. b. Spray lightly. c. Spray painting is fun, and a little practice will enable any amateur to obtain professional results.

[ 3 ] Why do I have to shake well?

a. High quality ingredients and very high pigmentation levels guarantee good coverage. Shaking the can well ensures that the pigments and other ingredients mix well for a perfect job. b. Shake the can until you hear the ball rattle, and then for at least a further two minutes.

c. Periodically during use shake the can for 5 to 10 seconds to ensure that the ingredients remain properly mixed.

d. Always perform a test spray on a piece of paper or cardboard prior to application on your object of choice.

[ 4 ] Is it necessary to use all of the contents at one time?

a. No. The valve on top of the can automatically seals itself. b. As long as you adhere to the directions in the next couple of sections you will be able to use your Dulux Duramax until the can is empty.

[ 5 ] How do I apply spray paint evenly?

a. Follow these simple tips to help ensure that your Dulux Duramax spray paint is evenly applied to your project every time.

b. Shake your Dulux Duramax spray can vigorously for two minutes after the ball within the can begins to rattle. c. Test your spray paint and painting technique on a piece of scrap material until you have achieved a satisfactory result. d. To ensure surface compatibility, test spray on an inconspicuous area before continuing with the whole project. (Some surfaces may need pre-treatment or be unsuitable for painting) e. Hold can upright 10 to 25cm from the surface. f. Begin and finish your spraying off the object, releasing the tip at the end of each pass

IMPORTANT TIP: Make sure that you start to move your hand with the spray can before you depress the nozzle.

g. Spray with smooth, even strokes parallel to the surface in an even side-to-side motion.

h. Overlap your previous spray pass by about one-third with each successive pass i. For smoothest results, we suggest always applying a coat of a Dulux Duramax primer before applying any Duramax® Top Coat.

j. Even though Dulux Duramax is formulated to resist running and sagging. It should be applied in one or more light coats, as opposed to one heavy coat. k. Release the trigger at the end of each stroke, to avoid a build up of too much paint at the ends.

l. DO NOT HOLD the valve open while the spray can is stationary as this will result in a heavy deposit of paint that will sag.

Dulux Duramax –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

[ 6 ] How do I prevent bubbles in my finished spray paint job?

a. Applying Dulux Duramax spray paint in ideal weather conditions can help prevent bubbles from forming on the surface of your project. We suggest applying Dulux Duramax when the temperature is between 10 and 35oC with a relative humidity below 85%.

b. In addition to this, we suggest applying the paint according to the manner outlined in the preceding FAQ.

c. If bubbles do occur: i. Allow spray paint to dry ii. Lightly sand the affected surface to remove all traces of the bubbles iii. Reapply Dulux Duramax under correct environmental conditions and using the previously described application method.

[ 7 ] How do I clean my spray paint valve?

a. Prevent blocking by turning the can upside down and spraying until clear gas emerges. ( 2 - 3 seconds of spray) Also wipe front of the nozzle clean. The spray tip is attached to a valve and a tube system that draws material from the very bottom of the can. b. When you turn the can upside down, the end of the tube is no longer in the paint but in a free gas layer inside the can. When the spray tip is depressed with the tube in free gas, it purges all paint from the tube valve and the spray tip leaving the system clean for next use.

c. Clean up any paint on the nozzle while it is still wet with mineral turps.

[ 8 ] What should I do with a clogged spray nozzle?

a. The following comments apply only to the Dulux Duramax range from Dulux®.

b. Other Dulux spray paints use a valve and nozzle combination where it is not recommended to remove and replace nozzles. Dulux Duramax has a nozzle design that allows replacement and fitment of different nozzles as needed.

c. When aerosol paints were first introduced, this was the number one complaint. However, technical improvements in both product and valve have practically eliminated this problem.

d. If the spray nozzle becomes clogged, rotate the nozzle by a 1/4 turn and try spraying again. If the spray nozzle continues to be clogged, remove and clean the nozzle stem using a toothpick and/or by soaking in acetone or comparable solvent to remove dried paint. e. You may be able to interchange spray nozzles from another Dulux Duramax can. DO NOT stick pins, wire or other objects into the hole on top of an aerosol can. f. Remember, after using an aerosol can it’s important to clear the valve to avoid having a clogged spray nozzle which affects future performance. We recommend that after each painting project, invert the aerosol can and press the nozzle until clear propellant gas is emitted, normally for

2-3 seconds.

[ 9 ] How long does Dulux ® Duramax® ® spray paint take to dry?

a. Dulux Duramax contains a rapid dry formulation that ensures the coating is touch dry in 20 minutes and ready to use in 1 hour. b. If the weather is very cold – less than 10oC – or very hot – more than 35oC avoid spraying if possible. High and low temperatures can have impacts on drying rate and gloss of the finished part. c. Where possible avoid spraying items in direct sunlight

[ 10 ] What is the coverage of Dulux ® Duramax® ®?

a. Dulux Duramax can cover up to 4.5m2 per can depending on the surface and colour used. b. Since spray paint is not recommended as a substitute for conventional paint in painting large, flat surfaces, it should be sold for what it does, rather than how much surface it covers. c. Coverage depends on the type of surface, porosity, thickness of application, original colour, surface profile and shape of the object and the skill of the painter. The benefits of using aerosol paint are the quality of the finish, time and convenience. No brushes or cleaning solvents are required. d. The cost of the can of spray paint is less than a good quality paint brush.

3 – APPLICATION Dulux Duramax –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 4 – APPLICATION

[ 11 ] How long should I wait between coats of spray paint?

a. Dulux Duramax can be recoated anytime after becoming touch dry (20 minutes).

b. This does not mean you should apply a single light coat then wait 20 minutes. Multiple light coats to build to a single coat with full cover are acceptable. c. After you gain coverage, wait for the 20 minutes than apply a second series of light coats.

d. Now wait for 1 hour, or the dry time specified and start using the item. (Important Tip:

Not all Dulux Duramax products dry in 1 hour – directions are provided on the can)

[ 12 ] How can I spray paint hard-to-reach areas?

a. Where possible move the object to be sprayed so that you can get access to the hard to reach areas without needing to contort yourself to do so.

b. Dulux recognizes that all spray paint projects are unique, and therefore a flexible approach to product application may be required. In response to needs for adaptable convenience, Dulux supplies on its Dulux Duramax colour paints, a general purpose nozzle that can handle projects small and large, short and wide.

c. This General Purpose nozzle has a relatively narrow fan width to assist with proper paint placement and minimise overspray. Additional nozzle configurations are available as part of a

Dulux Duramax accessory pack. For some applications you may find it better to use a nozzle with a different spray pattern from the accessory pack.

[ 13 ] What is primer and when should I use it?

a. A primer is designed to prepare bare metal, wood, canvas plastic or other materials to create a smooth surface for which your Dulux Duramax can be applied. A primer should be used on projects in order to seal the surface which will help:

I. Smooth out uneven surfaces and cover blemishes

II. Increase paint adhesion on difficult to bond substrates

III. Improve corrosion resistance (on metal substrates)

IV. Ensure that you achieve the truest colour of the paint by “hiding” any colour input from the substrate

[ 14 ] Why Should I Use A Primer?

a. Using a primer improves the amount of coverage you get from a can of Dulux Duramax top coat and it provides additional benefits for the following surfaces: b. Metal – Increases corrosion resistance on bare metal surfaces c. Wood – Helps avoid an uneven paint finish by sealing the surface and reducing uneven penetration of bare wood surfaces d. Plastic – provides a necessary “key” into the plastic surface to help secure the top coat to the object. (Important Tip: Not all plastics can be painted.) e. Unlike some Aerosol paint manufacturers, Dulux does not supply a “Paint and Prime” option in the Duramax® range. Dulux recognises that in many applications primers are not required.

Dulux is of a view that the compromise of final paint performance by inclusion of primer components is unnecessary. Since the top coat is what a user wants to perform in both visual and protective capacities, it is better to focus on building theses properties into the top coat and use purpose built primers where they are required.

[ 15 ] Can Dulux Duramax be used on Plastics?

a. Some plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene do not allow for paint adhesion, even with primers. b. Try to identify the type of plastic an article is made from before starting your project. Some plastic products will be marked with recycling information or with markings advising the type of plastic. If possible use these as reference information to define the plastic. c. For those plastics you cannot identify test in an inconspicuous area first. d. Hard plastic like uPVC pipe should be sanded with a fine (800 grit) wet and dry paper then wiped with alcohol before top coating.

8 – DULUX DURAMAX PRIMERS FOR OTHER SUBSTRATES Dulux Duramax –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

[ 18 ] Is Dulux Duramax able to be polished when it’s fully cured?

a. Yes, Dulux Duramax allows for the finished top coat to be polished again and again, ensuring that your projects continue to look great!

b. Products from the Turtle Wax® range can be used for this purpose.

[ 19 ] Why does my paintwork get runs in it?

a. There are several reasons why this may be occurring. If you are holding the can in one spot

- rather than using a sweeping motion -the paint tends to build up and form a run. You may also be holding the can too close to the object you are painting. For best results refer to the previous point on “How to apply paint evenly”. b. The temperature of the spray paint can and the object should be roughly room temperature. c. Any extremes in temperature, distance to substrate, or failure to keep the can moving when the valve is open, can cause irregularities in the finished paintwork.

[ 20 ] Why does my paint get cracks in it when it has dried?

a. This occurs for a number of reasons. If you apply a primer, (or a more highly pigmented paint) to a topcoat this can cause flaking and cracking. b. Cracks also appear from poor preparation. Always clean and degrease all surfaces to be painted. Sanding previously painted or new surfaces with a very fine paper (600 grit or finer) will assist with obtaining adhesion.

c. Use the recommended primer from the Dulux Duramax range to prime all surfaces for maximum adhesion and elasticity of your final coat. d. We always recommend using the same brand of product throughout the painting process.

e. Different companies have differing chemicals in their paints and this can cause reactions between coats.

[ 21 ] Why are there colour variations, from the one can, in my paintwork?

a. The most common cause of this is from not shaking the can for long enough. b. Shake the can until you hear the ball rattle and then for at least a further two minutes. This ensures the contents have completely mixed, as they may have settled and separated during transport. c. Colour variations can also occur when parts of a coat are missed or applied too lightly. Please ensure all areas are sprayed, in two coats, from a distance between 10 – 25 cms.

[ 22 ] Why doesn’t my painted surface have a glossy look to it?

a. This generally occurs when the spray can has been held too far away from the object while spraying. The paint dries in the air before it hits the surface and forms a rough layer on the object. Always hold the spray can at a maximum of 25cm from the object. b. If you have used a less than full gloss product then simply apply two layers of clear coat after the coloured paint has dried.

PREPARATION

[ 1 ] How do I prevent my spray can tip from clogging?

a. Prevent blocking by turning the can upside down and spraying until clear gas emerges. Also wipe front of nozzle clean. Clean up overspray while it is still wet with mineral turps.

[ 2 ] How do I prevent spray paint overspray?

a. Overspray can occur both indoors and outdoors. Depending on your project and location of your spray paint area, there are many materials that can be used to cover surrounding surfaces and protect them from overspray (newspapers, tape, drop sheets etc.).

b. Avoid spraying in an area subject to windy conditions.

Aerosol spray particles are very fine and have little momentum so can be easily misdirected by even light breezes.

c. Ensure that you do not spray from further away that 25cm from the target surface. The further from nozzle to target the greater the loss of particle momentum and the easier it is for a breeze to push it off course.

d. All spray nozzles are designed so that they create a fan.

This is set to a certain angle. Most Dulux Duramax colours and primers are set with nozzles to provide a fan between 9 and 13 degrees. Some manufacturers work with 30 degree nozzles. The wider the spray fan angle the more likely that overspray will occur as the distance to the target object increases.

e. Some objects that you want to spray will be contoured, rounded or have openings in them. Typical of such items is a wicker seated chair. When spraying such items, obtain a larger cardboard box, open it up to make a three sided room into which you can place the chair and spray from the open side. This will help reduce breeze influence on paint placement and reduce potential for overspray to get on objects you do not intend to coat.

f. If necessary mask and cover all items in the surroundings with a low cost, impermeable plastic drop sheet and use masking tape to secure in place.

9 – DURAMAX Dulux Duramax –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 10 – PREPARATION Dulux Duramax –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SAFETY, DISPOSAL AND

THE ENVIRONMENT

[ 1 ] Is good ventilation important when spraying paints?

a. When using Dulux Duramax products please remember that they are extremely flammable. b. You should use extreme caution and use them with adequate ventilation. c. Avoid breathing vapours or spray mist, open windows and doors, or use other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. d. Keep the area ventilated during use and until all vapours are gone. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing.

e. If required obtain a full cover face mask respirator fitted with a suitable vapour filter canister.

(Note that many graffiti artists have now taken to using such masks as they do their work.) f. DO NOT spray any Aerosol paint system in an area unless all potential sources of ignition have been expelled or removed. If inside this includes pilot lights, electric igniters on stoves and heating systems, and sparking electric motors and normal light and power switches.

g. When using Dulux Duramax DO NOT SMOKE.

[ 2 ] Is it possible for an aerosol can to burst?

a. Dulux Duramax is packaged according to Australian Standard AS2278 and meets demanding

International packaging codes for safe shipment of dangerous goods.

b. During production tests are performed on every can of Dulux Duramax as a precaution to eliminate the possibility of an aerosol can bursting. c. This includes full immersion of each paint can in a water solution at a temperature of 55°C and pressure to 190 lbs psi. d. Dulux Duramax cans exposed to higher temperatures can burst. e. To avoid potential for such a problem NEVER: i. Store Dulux Duramax cans near sparks, heat, or open flames ii. Store Dulux Duramax cans above 50°C. (This includes inside cars or car boots in Australian summers where temperatures inside a parked car can quickly rise above 50oC iii. Store Dulux Duramax in areas subject to exposure to direct sunlight or heat from radiators, stoves, hot water and other heat sources that may cause temperatures to exceed 50oC . f. If punctured accidentally, the contents may be blown out of the can very quickly. (Sometimes with explosive force.) g. DO NOT puncture, incinerate, burn or place a pressurized Dulux Duramax container in a garbage compactor.

[ 3 ] Can spray paints be safely used on children’s toys and furniture?

a. Yes. All Dulux Duramax spray paint is free of lead or other heavy metal pigments and can be safely used on children’s toys and furniture. b. When dried Dulux Duramax spray paint is non-toxic.

[ 4 ] Are Dulux Duramax spray paint cans recyclable?

c. Yes, Dulux Duramax spray paint cans and caps are designed to be recyclable. d. Before recycling the can, spray unwanted paint onto newspaper, allow it to dry and dispose of via domestic waste collection. e. Empty aerosol cans are recyclable via steel can recycling programs. f. Disposal of empty aerosol containers via domestic recycling programs differ between local authorities.

Check with your local council first.

g. A website to visit to understand your local council or

State/Territory regulations on paint disposal is found at http://recyclingnearyou.com.au/ This site is run by Planet

Ark and Sensis as an assist to everyone to access current information on their Local and State authorities positions on recycling and other environmental measures. Dulux has no connection to this site other than to recommend it as a reference tool.

[ 5 ] Are Dulux Duramax spray paints harmful to the

environment?

a. Dulux Duramax spray paint cans do not contain chlorofluorocarbons and other chemicals which are harmful to the ozone layer. They do contain solvents and hydrocarbon solvents but these have been carefully selected to provide minimal concerns for other environmental challenges (SMOG etc.) b. ALL Aerosol spray paints contain propellants either based on Hydrocarbon or Hydro Fluoro Carbon. It is the selection of paint and diluent solvents that makes the difference when it comes to environmental impact.

[ 6 ] Is it possible to abuse by Inhalation with Dulux

Duramax spray paint systems?

a. As a responsible corporate citizen Dulux works diligently to ensure that, the volatile ingredients in its Aerosol paint ranges contain materials with the lowest possible incentive for individuals to abuse by inhalation.

11 – SAFETY, DISPOSAL AND THE ENVIROMENT Dulux Duramax –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 12 – SAFETY, DISPOSAL AND THE ENVIROMENT Dulux Duramax –FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

TROUBLE SHOOTING

[ 1 ] What is the formulation of Dulux Duramax?

a. Dulux Duramax is a blend of high performance resins, pigments and other components, that deliver fast dry times and superior coverage.

b. The system has been designed to provide class leading “Return to Service” times across all colour products. c. Speciality products may exhibit longer dry times depending on the design of the product.

[ 2 ] Can I remove sand, dirt or grass from wet or tacky spray painted surfaces?

a. No, you should wait until the paint has dried to a point that you can abrade it back with fine sandpaper to remove such imperfections then start over with spraying.

b. When respraying place the object to be sprayed in an environment where contaminants do not have a potential to deposit into the wet paint.

[ 3 ] Can I spray Dulux Duramax over previously applied enamel paints?

a. Dulux Duramax has a unique solvent system to aid in its fast dry character. This solvent system has a tendency to lift or raise some previously enamel painted surfaces. When this happens the previously applied paint looses adhesion from the surface and can peel away immediately, or over time.

b. Test carefully in an inconspicuous area on pre-coated objects before proceeding.

[ 4 ] How do I remove pre-existing paint before applying Dulux Duramax?

a. If a test shows that Dulux Duramax has an effect on a previous paint system then follow the directions below.

b. Where necessary remove pre-existing paint before applying spray paint using heat or a suitable environmentally acceptable paint remover. (Selleys® Kwik® Strip Smart paint & varnish stripper is a suitable product of this type.) c. After the paint is removed clean and sand the project surface before application of an appropriate primer from the Dulux Duramax range. Once the primer is dry the surface is ready for Dulux Duramax® to be applied.

[ 5 ] Why does the colour appear to be flat or hazy?

a. Humid conditions may exist. Try again under less humid conditions. b. Surface you are spraying may be too hot. Remove the object from direct sunlight or heat; allow surface to cool and continue. c. Make sure the aerosol can and surface temperatures are between 10 and 35°C. Dulux recommends that you check your local weather conditions before you paint.

[ 6 ] How long can Dulux Duramax be stored before use?

a. Generally Dulux Aerosol paints are designed to be suitable for use for up to 2 years from date of manufacture when stored at temperatures between 10 and 35oC b. Experience demonstrates that some Dulux Aerosol products prepared several years ago still work perfectly; since the cans are sealed, it is doubtful that much could happen to the contents.

c. All Dulux Duramax products carry an unconditional guarantee for two years from Date of

Manufacture. Should there be a defective valve or a can that does not spray properly it will be replaced immediately.

[ 7 ] Is temperature important when I store an aerosol can?

a. For best results, aerosol cans should be stored upright and between 10 and 35°C. b. Storing aerosol cans upside down can cause pigments to settle in the neck of the can or in the valve and cause blockage. c. Cold temperatures usually won’t harm aerosol cans, however always let cans settle to room temperature before using. d. Dulux recommends NOT storing aerosol cans at extreme temperatures for prolonged periods of time.

[ 8 ] Why don’t metallic colours match?

a. Dulux Duramax Metallic paints are designed to be very robust so they can accommodate a wide window of application methods. However, the paints cannot compensate for all the things that people try to do with them. Therefore it is important to understand how these paints work so you can perfect your application technique and get the best from this truly wonderful range.

b. When spraying a metallic colour, you are actually spraying tiny flakes of metal in a paint coating.

These flakes reflect light. The more light they reflect, the brighter the coating appearance. c. When metallic paint is applied too heavily, the metal flakes are being buried under the surface of the paint coating. Here, they can’t reflect light and the colour appears dark and sometimes dull. d. When metallic paint is applied too lightly the metal flakes lie on top of the paint coating and reflect too much light, making the paint appear lighter and brighter in colour. In this situation, the metal flakes aren’t being covered by enough paint. e. By varying your spray technique you can achieve the colour and effect you want. Practice on a piece of metal before painting your intended object. There is no substitute for experience when spraying a metallic colour. Once you get it right you will find the Dulux Duramax products capable of providing new and exciting finishes not available elsewhere.

GENERAL INFORMATION

ON AEROSOL PAINTS

[ 1 ] What are aerosol paints?

a. Aerosol paint is a finely dispersed pigment, solvent, and resin blend mixed with a propellant in solution. b. Filling aerosol paints is more complicated than filling a can of brush-type paint. It requires a special technique and special equipment.

c. Aerosol paint formulations require skill, and experience to make paints that, when sprayed from an aerosol can, will give a paint finish that is better than you get with a conventional paint using a brush or roller application. d. The dictionary describes an aerosol as a”suspension of fine solid or liquid particles in air or gas.” However, the term”aerosol” is now applied to all push-button products propelled by gas from a container.

e. Today, thousands of consumer products are provided in safe, efficient and convenient aerosol formats.

[ 2 ] What makes Aerosol paints spray?

a. The aerosol delivery system comprises: i. A can capable of handling the high pressures resulting from the use of liquefied gas propellants.

ii. A valve and dip tube assembly to firstly seal and contain the contents under pressure, and secondly to be easily activated with finger pressure to open and allow the contents to escape.

iii. A nozzle arrangement configured to allow the controlled application of the contents of the container onto the surface it is intended to coat.

b. The contents of the can comprise iv. Solvents or water in which the paint is dissolved or suspended.

v. A blend of compatible ingredients made from pigments and resins and other additives that will remain after the propellant and the solvents have evaporated.

These you see as the paint film that remains.

[ 3 ] How is an Aerosol can assembled?

a. Firstly the paint component is filled into the aerosol can at atmospheric pressure. At this time the valve and spray nozzle assembly are not present.

b. Diluent solvent required to lower the viscosity of the paint is then added.

c. Depending on the process the valve and nozzle assembly are either crimped in place at this stage or a later stage in the process.

d. For aerosol paints with valves that are crimped after the addition of the diluent solvent the can is filled under pressure through the valve that has been crimped in place. This is called

“through valve filling”.

e. In another process the can containing the paint and diluent solvent is passed under a head that first injects the propellant gas then inserts seals and crimps the valve assembly in place. This process is called “under-cup filling”. f. Through Valve filling is a lower cost option as the machinery to do the job is less expensive.

However, line speeds using through valve systems are slower and there is an ever present danger of damaging the valve as the gas is injected.

g. Under cup filling is more expensive to set up but the faster line speeds and lesser prospect of damage to the valve during the gas charge process make up for the increased machinery costs.

h. In both cases the propellant creates an internal can pressure of about 30 - 80 psig at room temperature, by creating a gas phase in the head space of the container. i. When the nozzle is depressed, the airtight valve opens and paint, diluent solvent and propellant, mixed together in a precise ratio, flow up the dip tube to the nozzle. j. On reaching the nozzle the liquid gas is in a low pressure environment and rapidly expands causing a continuous micro explosion field just beyond the nozzle tip. This action divides the paint into small droplets and gives them momentum to push forward to the substrate.

k. As the product is used, the head space increases, creating more gas and providing a constant pressure down to the last gram of product.
