what makes cti so unique?
The CTi knee brace is our flagship ligament brace. Introduced
in 1983, CTi® remains the cornerstone of our ligament bracing
product line today. While the original CTi has evolved over time,
our basic philosophy remains unchanged. Specifically, we still
contend that a static support system consisting of a rigid brace
frame that captures the tibia and non-elastic cruciate straps is
superior to the dynamic solutions offered by most other ligament
brace manufacturers.
A rigid brace frame that captures the tibia is ideal. Non-rigid braces
fail under significant stress and braces that substitute soft tissue
containment for brace-to-bone contact usually have increased
migration problems. The rigid, carbon composite CTi knee brace
frame captures the tibia, providing the brace-to-bone contact
needed for maximum stabilization of the knee joint.
Non-elastic cruciate strapping is also crucial. When combined
with a rigid frame that truly captures the tibia, the result is a static
support system. Dynamic support systems with rubber (or elastic)
cruciate straps merely realign the knee joint after it has begun to
displace. Static systems hold the bones in proper alignment to
help prevent displacement altogether.
The Accutrac® hinge mimics the natural motion of the knee joint.
By analyzing natural leg motion, we invented a patented 4-bar
linkage system to more accurately mimic the natural movement
of the leg without a brace. Most of our ligament braces, including
CTi, feature the Accutrac hinge, which is also available in a ROM
version for many of our ligament products.
Total support. In addition to the Accutrac hinge, CTi features a
Total Support System™ for ligament, rotary and combined
instabilities (see right).
CTi goes off-the-shelf. In 2007, we introduced an off-the-shelf (OTS)
version of this classic. CTi OTS replaces a portion of the rigid
tibial component of the custom model with a flexible subshell and
Adjustable Tibial Strap (ATS). This solution still captures the tibia,
yet provides adjustability for variances in patient anatomy and an
excellent out-of-the-box fit.
Reduced Migration. Össur Sensil® Silicone is well-established in the
prosthetics industry. In 2007, we integrated this proprietary technology
with an Aerospacer base mesh fabric to create a patent-pending,
breathable padding system for CTi that virtually eliminates migration.
CTi technology is incorporated into our entire line. Whether custom
or off-the-shelf, premium or economy, every Össur ligament brace
benefits from the technology behind CTi. In particular, every
product in our ligament line incorporates some combination of
a rigid brace frame, flexible subshells, padding and strapping to
capture the tibia. While the 100% rigid tibial capture component of
the CTi custom brace provides the highest level of protection and
support, other products in our line may be more appropriate for
your patient, depending on their unique needs and activity level.

moderate MCL injuries, or mild combined ligament instabilities.
With a diagonal Dynamic Force Strap® that tightens when the knee
is extended, Trainer resists valgus forces and minimizes axial rotation.
Its carbon steel range-of-motion hinge and injection-molded carbon
shells are extremely durable, and an Adjustable Tibial Strap provides
tibial capture and improved suspension. The Trainer is an excellent

All custom knee braces are custom fabricated for a
unique individual and cannot be restocked. Therefore,
alteration or cancelation of a custom order may result in

alterations or cancelations as quickly as possible.

Before returning any Össur product for exchange, credit, or

2 Photos can be taken with a digital camera or smartphone. If using a smartphone, we suggest
you download one of the free grid camera applications. This will help minimize angle distortion.
• Apply landmarks to the leg with a marker at the medial and lateral joint spaces,1 plus a line
along the tibial crest between the center of the tibial tuberosity2 and 6" (15cm) below. Extra
landmarks can be added for better accuracy during chart analysis (e.g., outline patella).

• With the patient in a weight-bearing position, obtain the M-L measurement at the joint
space and record this value on the patient sticker.3
• Measure circumference at 3" (7.5cm) and 6" (15cm) both above and below the
patella4 and record these values on the patient sticker.
• Apply patient sticker 6" (15cm) above mid-patella for anterior view photo.

• If using a digital camera, adjust the height of the camera stand until the camera is level
with the middle of the patella. If using a smartphone, aim and hold the phone so the lens
is level with the middle of the patella.
• Move the camera stand (or smart phone) approximately 2-3 feet (61-91cm) away from the
patient, capturing roughly 8" (20cm) both above and below mid-patella in the viewfinder.5
Note: Align the camera with the leg to eliminate any internal or external rotation.
• Have the patient turn 90,° reapply patient sticker 6" (15cm) above joint line, and take a
picture of the lateral view.6
• Complete the Online Data Form at www.ossur.com/dms, attach the photos and submit.

• With the patient in a weight-bearing position, use the calipers to obtain the M-L measurement
at the joint space and record the value on the order form.
• Mark the patient’s leg at mid-patella, as well as 3", 6" and 8" above and below mid- patella.1

• With the ankle held at 90 degrees, record the circumference in centimeters at each of the
marked points from Step 1 above on the Custom Knee Brace order form.2
If measuring for a CTi brace:
Measure the patient’s tibial alignment using the standing graduated slider.3 At the mark
3" below mid-patella, bring the tool towards the lateral side of the calf until it just
touches the skin. Slide the horizontal bar down until it just touches the tibial crest. Read
the number on the horizontal bar at the point of intersection with the tibial crest. Repeat this
at the mark 8" below mid-patella. Record these two measurements on the order form next
to the 3” BELOW and 8” BELOW bubbles.
• Center the patient’s leg with mid-patella mark on line 5 of the tracing board.4 You can use
the centerline on the tracing tube to help align the mid-patella directly on line 5.
Note: If the patient has excessive tissue, use the knee center block to raise the knee
off the board. This helps maintain a proper profile of the leg.
• At the top of the board, hold the base of the tracing device flat on the board with the pen tip
facing the leg. Keep in contact with the leg while tracing the profile down to the bottom
of the board.5

• Without moving the leg, repeat on the other side.
• On the Custom Knee Brace order form, record the number where the tracing line
intersects each of the nine coordinates lines for sides A and B.
