Irving, Compliance Assistance Specialist, at 617-565-6924 ext. 631 OSHA Region I Cooperative and State Programs and the Area Offices are working with our State Partners, Alliances, Partnerships, Voluntary Protection Programs and SHARP companies have scheduled a Safety Awareness for Noise and Hearing Training “Listen Up” Day on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, starting anytime between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mission Description: During the allotted time frame of the “Listen Up,” each participating company will designate an individual to provide a group safety training component involving employees on their project/location. In addition, the company will review its facility/location or site and identify equipment that requires hearing protection or which noise could be reduced through engineering. Participating organizations will be asked to document training and inspections via their own internal attendance sheets and complete a course evaluation to assist in determining of the effectiveness of this event. Approximately 22 million U.S. workers exposed to hazardous noise levels at work. An estimated $242 million is spent annually on worker’s compensation for hearing loss disability. NIOSH recommends removing hazardous noise from the workplace whenever possible and using hearing protectors in those situations where dangerous noise exposures have not yet been controlled or eliminated. Most industries and facilities are exposed to noise related hazards, such as construction, manufacturing, retail, transportation and education and all employees must be trained in recognizing the hazards associated with working on and around loud equipment.
