OSHA Region I Cooperative and State Programs and the Area Offices are working with our State Partners, Alliances,
Partnerships, Voluntary Protection Programs and SHARP companies have scheduled a Safety Awareness for Noise and
Hearing Training “Listen Up” Day on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, starting anytime between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and
10:30 a.m.
Mission Description: During the allotted time frame of the “Listen Up,” each participating company will designate an
individual to provide a group safety training component involving employees on their project/location. In addition, the
company will review its facility/location or site and identify equipment that requires hearing protection or which noise could
be reduced through engineering. Participating organizations will be asked to document training and inspections via their
own internal attendance sheets and complete a course evaluation to assist in determining of the effectiveness of this
event. Please coordinate the totals for your facility/location or site and have one course evaluation completed per
facility/location or site: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KWS7GR5
General Information: According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, occupational hearing loss is the most
common work-related illness in the United States. Approximately 22 million U.S. workers exposed to hazardous noise
levels at work. An estimated $242 million is spent annually on worker’s compensation for hearing loss disability. NIOSH
recommends removing hazardous noise from the workplace whenever possible and using hearing protectors in those
situations where dangerous noise exposures have not yet been controlled or eliminated. Most industries and facilities are
exposed to noise related hazards, such as construction, manufacturing, retail, transportation and education and all
employees must be trained in recognizing the hazards associated with working on and around loud equipment.
