Anti-Static VS Static Dissipative
Please see below to clarify terminologies
regarding STATIC products:
The terms anti-static, conductive, and
dissipative are all terms that subdivide
ESD into more detail. Something insulative is not considered ESD safe.
Materials are divided into these terms
based on their individual surface resistance. Surface resistance is a measurement of how easily an electric charge can
travel across a medium.
Conductive materials are materials that
have a surface resistance of less than 1 x
10 5 ohms/square.
Dissipative items have a surface resistance of more than 1 x 10 5 ohms/
square but less than 1 x10 10 ohms/square.
Anti-static materials are generally referred to as any material which inhibits
triboelectric charging. This kind of charging is the buildup of an electric charge by
the rubbing or contact with another material.
ANTI-STATIC VS. STATIC DISSIPATIVE:
A: Anti-Static refers to the ability to suppress charge generation or the prevention
of static build up. Anti-static materials
will not safely attract or decay a static
charge before it randomly discharges. Anti
-static material is usually indicated by an
electrical resistance range, measured in
ohms, of a minimum of 1E10, (10 giga
ohms), to a maximum of 1E12, (1 trillion
ohms).
B: Static dissipative material is defined
as a material having a surface resistance
(SR) from 1x105 ohm to 1x109ohm A static dissipative material is difficult to charge
and its charge transfer speed is not high
making it an ideal material for ESD sensitive applications. IE: it will dissipate the
electrostatic charge without inducing a
spark.
Insulative materials are materials that
have a surface resistance of greater than 1
x 10 12 ohms/square.
