Two – 3” strips of fabric x WOF
One 9” or larger zipper
Vinyl – medium weight – cut 15” x 9.5”
Thread to match fabric
Mark a dot on both long edges of the vinyl at 6.5” and 8.5”.
With wrong sides together, iron each strip of fabric in half lengthwise, then fold raw edges to the center and iron again. (Same
as for double bias tape.) Strips are now ¾” wide.
Sub cut these fabric strips to 22”, 11”, 10” and 10” long.
Along each 9.5” side of the vinyl, sew a 10” strip of bias tape. Place the vinyl edge between the folded edges of each strip.
Increase stitch length from 2.2 to about 2.4 or 2.6. Sew a 1/8” seam along the side of the fabric closest to the vinyl edge.
Sew zipper along each edge, tucking the bias strip up to the zippers edge. (You may need to remove the metal stop, if it is too
close to your sewn seam. The extra length of zipper can be secured at the base and cut off. Sew the zipper in with a 1/8” seam
or as close as possible.
Fold vinyl side edges, matching the marks placed at 6.5” and 8.5” The fold should go into the center of the pouch. This will
create a 1” pleat in the bottom of the bag.
On the edge of the tote (with the base of the zipper) sew on the 11” strip of fabric, folding over the ends.
On the edge of the tote (with the zipper pull), sew on the 22” strip of fabric, folding over the end. Take the top end of the strip
and put through the zipper pull. Fold over the end, and sew closed.
