Game 7: Tonight at Oracle Arena, the Thunder is set to compete in a Game 7 for the third time in the Oklahoma City era. The Thunder is a perfect 2-0 in Game 7’s previously. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, teams playing a Game 7 on the road after having held a 3-1 series lead are 7-7 all-time in the postseason. In fact, the road team has won Game 7 in three of the last four such instances (Dallas over San Antonio in 2006, L.A. Clippers over Memphis in 2012 and Chicago over Brooklyn in 2013). Should the Thunder defeat the Warriors, Oklahoma City will advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2012 and OKC would become the first team in NBA history to defeat two 65+ win teams in the playoffs. Close Out Games: The Thunder enters Game 7 in Oakland with a record of 8-4 in close out games during the Oklahoma City era (7-2 at home) after defeating the San Antonio Spurs earlier this postseason in the Conference Semifinals. The only two losses in close out games (prior to Games 5 and 6 vs. GSW) occurred in the opening round of the 2013 playoffs versus Houston (Russell Westbrook did not play). Prior to Games 5 and 6 vs. the Warriors, the Thunder had won its last five consecutive closeout games (Game 6 at Houston in 2013, Game 7 vs. Memphis in 2014, Game 6 vs. Clippers in 2014, Game 5 vs. Dallas in 2016 and Game 6 vs. San Antonio in 2016). Big Wins in Games 3 and 4: In Oklahoma City’s back-to-back victories in Games 3 and 4 (Golden State had not previously lost back-to-back games all season), the Thunder won by an average of 26 points (OKC outscored GS 125.5 to 99.5 in Games 3 and 4). After shooting 48.7 percent during the regular season, the Thunder limited the Warriors to 41.3 percent shooting in the last two games. The Thunder became just the second team in NBA history to secure back-to-back 20-point playoff victories over the team with the best regular season record (The Lakers accomplished the feat in 2001 versus the Spurs). The Thunder scored 72 points in the first halves of both Games 3 and 4 to become the first team since the 1987 L.A. Lakers to accomplish the feat in the postseason. Going Small was Big: In Games 3 and 4, the Thunder outscored the Warriors 91-35 with a lineup of Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka, Andre Roberson, Dion Waiters and Russell Westbrook on the court. With a career-high 17 points in Game 4, Andre Roberson became the only player in the last four seasons to register 17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals versus the Warriors. Playoff Westbrook: After his 31-point effort in Game 5 at Oracle Arena, Westbrook had scored 30-plus points in each of the last three games versus the Warriors. Before this series, Westbrook had never scored 30-plus points in back-to-back postseason games. In Game 4 vs. Golden State, Westbrook registered his fifth career postseason triple-double with 36 points to go along with 11 rebounds and 11. It was the third 30-point playoff triple-double for Westbrook which places him third all-time behind LeBron James and Oscar Robertson (both those players have eight such triple-doubles). Westbrook became the first player to record a 30-point playoff triple-double against the defending NBA Champions since Charles Barkley accomplished the feat in 1993. In the first four games of the series, Westbrook handed-out 12+ assists to become just the third player in the last 20 years to dish-out at least twelve assists in four consecutive games within one playoff year (Steve Nash and Rajon Rondo). Westbrook had never previously posted a streak of four games with at least twelve assists during the regular season. Game 3 Notes: Through three quarters of play in Game 3, the Thunder led 117-80. The 117 points scored through three quarters represented the 3rd highest total in NBA playoff history. Additionally, Oklahoma City's 37-point lead at the end of the third quarter matched the third-largest lead at the end of three quarters for any Conference Finals or NBA Finals game. In the third quarter alone, the Thunder scored 45 points on 17-of-22 shooting (.773) which represents the most points scored in the single quarter in the postseason during the Thunder era. In the final 8:36 of the first half, OKC outscored the Warriors 32-7 to take a 72-47 lead at halftime (the 72 points represented the most first half points for the Thunder during postseason play). Game 1 at Golden State: After splitting the first two games at Oracle Arena, the Thunder has gone 5-2 on the road during the 2016 playoffs. After a Game 1 victory against the Warriors, Oklahoma City compiled three straight road wins against San Antonio and Golden State. To put this into perspective, the rest of the NBA combined to win just three games against both the Spurs and Warriors during the regular season. The Game 1 victory at Oracle Arena represented the first road victory for the Thunder in Game 1 of a postseason series (OKC was 0-5 previously). It's been over five years since Golden State lost a game (regular season or playoffs) after leading by at least 13 points at the half (GSW lost to the Heat on 1/1/11 after leading by 14 points at the half). In fact, the Warriors went 37-0 this season when leading by 13+ at halftime. Steven Suring: After his 16-point and 12-rebound effort in Game 1 at Golden State, Steven Adams has now registered six double-doubles during the 2016 playoffs, which matches his total from the entire 2015-16 regular season. Thunder vs. Warriors: The Thunder and Warriors are facing-off in postseason play for the very first time in the history of the two teams. By advancing to the Conference Finals for the fourth time in the past six seasons, the Thunder became just the fifth team in the past 20 years to accomplish such a feat (joining the Heat, Lakers, Pistons and Spurs). The Warriors (114.9 ppg) and Thunder (110.2 ppg) were the league’s top two scoring teams during the regular season and this marks the first playoff series between teams that each averaged at least 110 points since Phoenix and Portland met in the 1992 Western Conference Semifinals. Elite Company: Since the start of the 2009-10 season, the Thunder has won five Northwest Division titles, reached the Conference Finals on four occasions and amassed a record of 371-187 (.665). Based on winning percentage, the Oklahoma City Thunder ranks as the fourth most winning team among the four major professional sports (NBA, NFL, MLB & NHL). Best Records Since 2009-10 season (includes NBA, NFL, MLB & NHL teams) New England Patriots .753 (85-27) San Antonio Spurs .721 (401-155) Green Bay Packers .692 (77-34-1) Oklahoma City Thunder .665 (371-187) Lots of Playoff Wins Before 28: Entering the Thunder’s series against the Warriors, the Oklahoma City trio of Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka and Russell Westbrook have amassed 44 postseason wins all before age 28. Only the Michael Jordan era Bulls’ teams and the Magic Johnson era Lakers had a trio register more than 40 playoff wins all by the age of 28. There are 11 trios (Between the Bulls and Lakers) 28 years of age or younger in NBA history with more than 40 wins. The top trio in NBA history is BJ Armstrong, Horace Grant and Scottie Pippen with 54, followed by Magic Johnson, Dennis Scott and James Worthy with 51. The other nine trios are all Bulls trios ranging from 42 to 46 wins. Conference Finals: After defeating the Spurs in the Conference Semifinals, the Thunder has now won 10 playoff series in the last five seasons. Only the Miami Heat (15) have won more postseason series during this span (San Antonio has also won 10 playoff series). By defeating the Spurs in six games, the Thunder became the first team since the 1985 Lakers to win a playoff series after losing Game 1 by 30+ points. KD & Russ in the Playoffs: After scoring 26 and 36 points in Game 4 vs Golden State, respectively, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook have now each scored 25 or more points in 37 postseason games. The chart below highlights the rarity of such an accomplishment for a pair of teammates. Most Games With 25 Points Each (teammates in same playoff game) Elgin Baylor & Jerry West (Lakers): 50 Kevin Durant & Russell Westbrook (Thunder): 37 Shaquille O’Neal & Kobe Bryant (Lakers): 33 Series vs. Spurs Recap: After losing Game 1 in San Antonio by 32 points, the Thunder responded by winning four of the next five games to secure the series victory. Although the Spurs lost just once at home during the regular season, the Thunder managed to win two games at AT&T Center in the Conference Semifinals. In Game 5, the Thunder became the first team since 2003 to overcome a 13-point second half deficit in San Antonio (Dallas overcame a 17-point second half deficit in SA on 5/27/03. During the series, the Spurs lost back-to-back postseason games after entering the fourth quarter with a lead for the first time during the Tim Duncan era. Billy on Board: In his first season at the helm of the Thunder, Billy Donovan became the only first-year NBA head coach in league history to win 55 games after coming directly from the college ranks. Additionally, Donovan became just the third first year head coach in the last 15 years to win 55+ games during his first season (Kerr & Thibodeau). Moreover, Donovan is the sixth first year head coach in the last 20 years to advance to the Conference Finals. On April 30, 2015 Billy Donovan was named the third head coach in Thunder history after enjoying an incredibly successful college coaching career which spanned more than two decades. During the past 19 years as head coach at the University of Florida, Donovan led the Gators to two National Championships and four trips to the Final Four while amassing a record of 467-186 (.715). Last season, Donovan became the second youngest coach in NCAA history (Bob Knight) to claim 500 wins. 41 For KD: During Game 4 vs. San Antonio, Kevin Durant equaled his postseason career-high by scoring 41 points on 14-of-25 shooting. In the fourth quarter alone, Durant outscored the entire Spurs team (17-16) as Durant made all six of his field goal attempts. Durant’s 29 second half points represent the most in one half in a Thunder playoff game during the OKC era. Additionally, in the last seven postseasons, Durant has registered six 40-point games (trails only LeBron James with seven 40-point games during this span). Opening Round Success: With the Thunder’s opening round series victory over the Mavericks, the Thunder has now advanced to the Conference Semifinals in each of the team’s last five postseason appearances. OKC is currently the only team in the Western Conference to accomplish such a feat. In the last 20 years, the Thunder is one of eight teams to win five straight opening round playoff series. Young and Getting Better: As of the final day of the regular season, the Thunder starting five stood as the 8th youngest starting lineup in the NBA (25 years and 265 days old). Entering the Western Conference Semifinals versus San Antonio, the age of the Thunder’s top seven leading scorers averaged 26 years and 68 days. As a comparison, the Spurs top seven scorers averaged 31 years and 182 days. Difference a Game Makes: After allowing the Spurs to score 124 points on 60.7 percent shooting in Game 1, the Thunder responded by holding San Antonio to 97 points on 42.6 percent shooting in Game 2. In the first quarter alone, the Thunder limited the Spurs to 21 points on 38.5 percent shooting on Monday night after allowing San Antonio to score 43 points on 81.8% shooting in Game 1. Series Win vs. Dallas: With a 118-104 victory in Game 5, the Thunder defeated the Mavericks 4-1 in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs. The series featured the largest playoff victory in the Thunder era (38-point victory in Game 1) and the largest road victory in the Thunder era (29-point victory in Game 3). The 18.2 point per game margin in this series represented the largest margin of victory in the Thunder’s 14 playoff series (a 9.4 margin during 2012 playoff vs. the LA Lakers represented the previous Thunder-high). Thunder Ratings: In the opening round versus Dallas, the Thunder posted an offensive rating of 117.7 (1st among teams in the 2016 postseason). The Thunder’s overall rating of 18.4 trailed only the Spurs in the first round. In 79 minutes against Dallas, the Thunder starters held a net rating of 27.2. This represented the highest net rating of any lineup in the first round of the 2016 postseason (min. 30 minutes). Bench Scoring: In the opening round vs. Dallas, the Thunder’s bench averaged 34.4 points per game. It has been nearly five years since the Thunder reserves scored 34.4 ppg in a postseason series (OKC’s bench averaged 35.9 ppg in the 2011 conference semifinals vs. Memphis). Playoff Bound: With a regular season record of 55-27, the Thunder enters the postseason for the sixth time in the past seven seasons as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Since the Thunder made the Finals in 2012, Oklahoma City has gone 159-62 (.719) when Durant, Westbrook, and Ibaka have been healthy and active, which would translate to a 59-win per season average over that stretch. The .719 win percentage would rank 2nd among all teams during that period. Game 3 vs. DAL Notes: During the Thunder’s 29-point victory in Game 3, both Enes Kanter (21 points) and Dion Waiters (19 points) came off the Thunder bench to score 19+ points. This represented the first playoff game in Thunder history in which two reserves each scored 19 or more. In the last five years, such a feat has only occurred five times during the NBA postseason. Also in Game 3, OKC went 15-of-27 from behind the 3-point line. The 15 made three point field goals set an OKC era playoff record. Game 1 vs. DAL Recap: During Game 1 in Oklahoma City, the Thunder claimed their largest playoff victory (38 points) in the Oklahoma City era. The OKC lead ballooned to as many as 44 points in the second half as the Thunder held the Mavericks to 70 points on 29.8% shooting (both opponent playoff lows for OKC). Through three quarters of play, the Thunder led by 42 points (that’s the largest lead through three quarters in a postseason game since the 1990). When Kevin Durant checked out of the game with 4:43 left in the third quarter, the Durant and Russell Westbrook tandem had outscored the entire Mavericks team by a 43-42 margin (OKC led 77-42 at that point in the game). Game 1 Implications: The Thunder’s game 1 victory in the first round vs. Dallas represented the 20th time in NBA history in which a higher seed won by 30 or more. In each of the previous 19 instances, the higher seed went onto win the series. When taking a 1-0 series lead in a best of 7 series, the Thunder has gone 15-6. Entering the 2016 postseason the team that wins Game 1 has gone on to win 372 of 483 (.770) best-of-seven series. Kanter Can: In Game 4 of the opening round at Dallas, Enes Kanter recorded 28 points on 12-of-13 shooting from the field. Kanter became the first NBA player to record 25+ points in a postseason game while shooting at least 90% from the field since Serge Ibaka accomplished the feat on 6/2/2012 vs. the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. Kanter also became the first non-starter to accomplish the feat since Brad Davis of the Mavericks on 4/25/1986 (26 points on 8-for-8 shooting). In the three Thunder wins this series, Kanter is averaging 21.7 points (on 25-of-30 shooting) to go along with 9.0 rebounds. Boards are the Barometer: The Thunder finished the 2015-16 season as the leading rebounding team in the NBA (48.6 rebounds per game). OKC finished the year going 46-16 when outrebounding the opposition. Moreover, the Thunder’s 8.4 rebounding differential is the fourth largest margin since 1950, when rebounding first became a statistic. There were 44 instances this past season in which OKC outrebounded the opposition by 10 or more. No other team in the NBA history has ever accomplished such a feat. OKC also led the league in offensive rebounding (The Thunder controlled 31.1% of its offensive rebound chances, which is the highest percentage for any Thunder era). Division Champs: On March 20, the Thunder solidified its fifth Northwest Division title in the past six years and by accomplishing the feat, OKC became just the seventh team in NBA history to win five division titles in six seasons. Additionally, the Thunder became just the third team to win five out of seven division titles immediately following a season with 23 or fewer wins. The first two were the St. Louis Hawks from 1953-54 to 1960-61, and the Baltimore/Capital Bullets from 1966-67 to 1973-74. Finally, since the start of the 2008-09 season, the Thunder is one of two teams (San Antonio) to win a division title in five of six seasons. Near or at the Top: The Thunder concluded the 2015-16 season ranking among the top of the NBA in several statistical categories. Oklahoma City wrappedup the year ranking second in the NBA in scoring (110.2 ppg) while ranking third in field goal shooting percentage (.476 FGs). Additionally, OKC led the NBA in rebounding (48.6 rpg) while ranking fourth in blocked shots (5.94 bpg). This past season, the Thunder registered 23.0 assists per game, which represents the highest assist total during the Thunder era. Furthermore, the Thunder posted a 7.6 net rating this past season (represents the second highest during the Thunder era and the ninth best of any team in the last five years). Starting 5: The Thunder’s starting lineup (Westbrook-Roberson-Durant-Ibaka-Adams) was incredibly effective and efficient this past season. The Thunder starters scored 113.3 points per 100 possessions, which actually topped the Warrior’s league-best offense (112.3 points scored per 100 possessions). On the other side of the court, the Thunder starters allowed just 95.6 points per 100 possessions, which was better than the Spurs’ league- best defense (96.5 points allowed per possession). The Thunder starters outscored their opponents by 17.8 points per 100 possessions this past season. To put some perspective on this, the OKC starters outscored opponents by 292 points this season, which is 126 more points than the next best lineup in the NBA. Kanter Can: During the Thunder’s regular season finale in San Antonio, Enes Kanter recorded his 25th double-double of the season (most among NBA reserves) with 17 points and 16 rebounds. On April 6th in Portland, Enes Kanter became the first player in Thunder history to record a 30-point and 20rebound game. Westbrook Wows: During the 2015-16 season, Russell Westbrook recorded 18 triple-doubles which equals the most in the NBA since Magic Johnson accomplished the feat during the 1981-82 season. During the month of March, Westbrook posted seven triple-doubles as he became the first player since Michael Jordan (in April of 1989) to register seven triple-doubles in a single month. After his 21-point, 15-assist and 10-rebound effort on March 22 versus Houston, Westbrook recorded a third consecutive triple-double for the third time in his career [Only Oscar Robertson (13), Wilt Chamberlain (6) and Magic Johnson (4) have more career streaks of three-plus consecutive triple-doubles]. Additionally, eight of Westbrook’s triple-doubles were recorded through just three quarters of play (the rest of the NBA combined had seven such triple-doubles this past season). His triple-double in 18 minute vs. the Lakers on April 11 is the second fastest in NBA history (one minute shy of Jim Tucker’s all-time record of 17 minutes in 1955). Westbrooks 36 career triple-doubles places him second among active NBA players (LeBron James owns 42 career triple-doubles). Most Triple-Doubles in a Season Most Triple-Doubles in a Month (Past 30 years) Russell Westbrook: 18 (2015-16) Jason Kidd: 13 (2007-08) Grant Hill: 13 (1996-97) Jason Kidd: 12 (2006-07) Wilt Chamberlain: 11 (March of 1968) Russell Westbrook: 7 (March of 2016) Michael Jordan: 7 (April of 1989) Larry Bird: 6 (February of 1986) Reserves are Ready: The Thunder finished this past season going 33-7 when the OKC bench outscores the opposing team’s reserves. On Nov. 8 vs. Phoenix, Kanter made 9-of-10 shots en route to 21 points and Waiters chipped-in 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting. This represented the first time during the Thunder era in which two reserves each scored 19+ points. On the season, OKC went 14-1 when six players score in double figures. Player Efficiency Ratings: The Thunder finished the season with three players (Durant, Kanter and Westbrook) ranking in the top 10 of PER. • Durant’s PER this season is 28.3 (ranks 2nd), which is 3rd best season of his career (29.8 in 2013-14, 28.3 in 2012-13) • Westbrook’s PER this season was 27.7 (ranks 3rd), which is his the 2nd best season of his career (29.1 in 2014-15) • Kanter’s PER this season is 24.1 (ranks 10th), which is his career-high • No other team this season has more than one player in the top 10 of PER (Thunder has three) This is a historically significant group of PERs: The combined PER of Durant and Westbrook is 55.9 this season, which is 2nd highest total of any 2 players on the same team in the shot clock era (57.0 for James/Wade MIA in 2011-12). Additionally, the combined PER of Durant, Westbrook, and Kanter is 80.1 this season, which is the highest total of any three players on the same team in the shot clock era. During the shot clock era, no other team has ever had three players with a PER over 23.0. First Since MJ: With regular season averages of 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.0 assists, Kevin Durant became the first player since Michael Jordan (1988-89 season) to average 28+ points, 8+ rebounds and 5+ assists. Additionally, Durant scored 20+ points tonight in his final 64 appearances of the season. The 64 games with 20 or more represents the most since Jordan scored 20+ in 69 straight games during the 1990-91 season. 50 wins: On March 24, the Thunder claimed a 22-point home victory over the Jazz and in the process, OKC recorded the team’s 50th win of the season. Oklahoma City has now finished with a winning percentage of .610 (equivalent to 50 wins) six times dating back to the 2009-10 season. Only the San Antonio Spurs (seven seasons with .610 winning percentage), have reached that benchmark more during this period. Offensive Efficiency: This past season, the Thunder registered a 113.2 offensive rating, the highest during the Thunder era. This represents the second highest offensive rating in the past five years (only the 2015-16 Warriors were better at 114.6). This was in part due to the team’s ability to generate more efficient shots. OKC generated 8.3% of its shots from the corner 3 (the most ever in the Thunder era and the 5th most in the NBA this season). KD Streaking: After scoring 34 points during his final regular season appearance vs. the Lakers on April 11, Kevin Durant scored 20+ points in 64 straight games, which represented the longest streak of his career. Durant is now one of three players (Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan) to record multiple single season 20-point scoring streaks in excess of 50 games. Durant is the first player since Michael Jordan to score 20 or more in 64 straight games (Jordan scored 20+ in 69 straight games during the 1990-91 season).
