Having designed, produced, tested and serviced advanced UPS systems for cruise liners, ferries, ice breakers, LNG carriers, cable ships, dredgers and oil rigs all over the world, Eaton is a global leader in power quality for marine applications with 50 years of experience in power protection for the marine and offshore sector. The company’s broad range of marine UPS’s covers solutions from 1 to 1,100 kVA. Of these, units from 1 to 15 kVA have type approval from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) as well type approval or product design assessment from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). For applications with power ratings greater than 15 kVA, the required approvals are obtained by Eaton working with the global classification societies for system testing and certification. “Our marine UPS models are based on the same proven technology used in our standard UPS’s, but they have been designed especially for the challenging conditions on-board marine and offshore vessels and to meet the requirements of the relevant classification societies”, explains Teppo Henttonen, 3ph Solutions Manager for Eaton Power Quality, EMEA. “By investing in, and committing to, the type approvals we are able to offer our customers power quality solutions which not only help them save time and money, but also provide peace of mind.” - more - Eaton/Page 2 The type approved UPS’s generally do not require additional inspections or project certifications and are ready for use ‘as is’, allowing for short lead times and saving customers weeks of waiting during individual certification processes. The type approvals also mean that the products have been rigorously tested and are guaranteed to meet the classification societies’ requirements. The majority of marine UPS’s are based on double-conversion topology to ensure the most effective protection against any type of power disruption. Here, the load is isolated from anything untoward that may be affecting the mains power. The portfolio comprises UPS’s to protect bridge equipment (integrated bridge and navigation systems), safety related systems (emergency and helideck lighting, communications, alarm systems, waterproof doors etc.) and commercial applications used in cruise liners (cash registers in restaurants, shops and casinos, CCTV, IT systems etc.), as well as UPS’s that ensure uninterrupted operation of special control systems on-board of vessels for tasks like exploring, drilling, lifting, cable lying or dredging. The small systems portfolio ranging from 1 to 3 kVA include the Eaton Evolution 1150 Marine, 9130 Marine and the EX Marine. They come as tower models with the EX also being rack system capable. All feature automatic bypass, multilingual LCD display, power management software, USB and serial ports and are equipped with hot swappable batteries. Mid-range systems with power ratings from 8 to 160 kVA comprise the Eaton 9155, 9355 and 9390 Marine. These units offer a choice of varying inputs and outputs and all have a small footprint. For large system requirements from 225 to 1,100 kVA, Eaton offers the 9395 Marine UPS featuring a three-phase input and output and the possibility for inherent redundancy. For both, the mid-range and large systems patented HotSync® technology facilitates the paralleling capability for up to four units and advanced battery management ABM® technology extends battery service life. Beyond these standard offerings Eaton is also capable of customising its systems to meet specific customer needs. This could mean functional and/or appearance related modifications, or involve alterations to meet particular demands such as voltage and frequency conversion including shore power solutions up to 4MVA. Eaton can also accommodate a customer’s need for a flexible delivery schedule by, for example, delivering the battery cabinets when the ship is being built and the batteries themselves later, once the ship is being delivered. The comprehensive level of service that Eaton offers starts with the design phase, testing and installation, but then also reaches beyond aftersales. For example, thanks to the fact that Eaton/Page 3 the marine units are based on standard designs, spares are readily available worldwide. Additionally, Eaton’s UPS service network, which comprises more than 1,200 service professionals and a significant number of authorised service partners worldwide, ensures customers get the same high-quality services wherever they operate.
