Industrial Ringroad stay cable bridge - Thailand VSL setting the pace erecting two stay cable bridges simultaneously in central Bangkok Picture showing three of the four pylon of the Industrial Ring road Bridge. Scope of works performed • Supply + installation of post-tensioning • Supply + installation of stay cables • Erection of deck segments consists of three separate contracts, of which VSL were involved in the contract 1 and 2: • Contract 1: Southern Section: stay cable composite bridge across Chaophraya at Southern Phra Padaeng with 7 traffic lanes, concrete pylon height of 172m, main-span of 398m, totally 702m long and 1090m ramp 6-73, 6-85 and 6-91, with a length between 75.6m and 212.4m. VSL (Thailand) Ltd. was awarded the contract for the supply & installation of 2,570t post tensioning & 2,300t of stay cable as well as the segment erection works for C1 and C2 in June 2001. The first stay cable was installed on 16th November 2005 and following a tight five and six day cycle, the • Contract 2: Northern Section: stay erection works were finalized within a cable composite bridge across record time of 4 months with the last Chaophraya at Northern Phra stay cable erected 19th March 2006. Padaeng with 7 traffic lanes, VSL standard strand-by-strand concrete pylon height of 162m, installation techniques utilizing a main span of 326m, totally 576m winches and were stressed by a long and 2300m ramp. The size of the stay sizes 6-43, 6-55 and 6-73 + one leak cables used on the project tightness test were conducted and varies between 6-43, 6-55, 6-61, passed the criteria laid out. ID 1546 The idea for an industrial ring road system was originally put forward by his Majesty the King, in order to relieve the traffic congestion for the areas of Bangkok Port, Poochao Saming Phrai Road and Suksawat Road which are the main industrial areas. As such, the Industrial Ring Road (IRR) will be utilized for transportation between the industrial estates in Phra Padaeng and Samut Prakarn and Klongtoei Port and the connection to Rama 2 Highway, Sukhumvit Road and Bangna – Bang Pakong Highway. The IRR Project Methods, drawings, materials and suppliers, all went through an extensive approval process and procedure, where all component suppliers received individual visits from the client’s engineers and went through quality audits audits, before being approved for the project. The composite bridge deck segments were pre-fabricated approximately 22km down the Chaophraya River and transported to the vicinity of the bridges, the lifting speed of the VSL system was set such that the lifting could be completed safely in approximately two hours. The composite bridge deck segments were pre-fabricated approximately 22-km down the Chaophraya River and transported to the site by barges. Using the new highly mobile VSL Modular Self Launching Deck Erection Gantries, the 36 x 12m segments weighing 500t were lifted from the barge to the final deck elevation. The key works of deck lifting and stay cable installation were carried out by VSL operating on a 24/7 schedule, the co-ordination between the two disciplines resulted in a erection cycle two days faster than initially anticipated, allowing a gain of about a month in main decks erection program.
