Dear Final Year Social Work Student,
On behalf of all staff we would like to welcome you into the final year of your Social Work
course. We congratulate you on your successful completion of last year’s study and look
forward to working with you throughout 2016. This letter contains important information
about your studies in 2016. Please read this letter carefully.
Please note that there are no on-campus orientation sessions for final year students.
However, there are several preparatory steps you will need to take to be ready for Semester
1 (which commences on 22nd of February 2016). To help you plan, we have included a
checklist on the final page.
Your enrolment
Please check your enrolment for the whole of 2016 is correct and up to date. If you are
planning to go on placement this year, you need to be enrolled in Social Work Practicum 2
and Advanced Critical Practice units as well as your Semester 1 units. This will ensure that
you receive information about preparing for placement in Semester 1.
Lectures in final year units
All lectures and associated learning material will be once again available and delivered via
MyLO. Unit outlines will be available on MyLO. You will be able to access MyLO for each
unit on the first day of semester: Monday 22nd February. All units will have online material to
view in Week 1 and Week 2 so when you arrive for your first tutorial, it is expected that
you have already watched the online material, read the associated readings and
attended to the homework set (where relevant).
Tutorials in final year Semester 1 units
Week One start: Weekly tutorials for HGW401/HGW611 Direct Practice 2 and HGW414
(Honours students) commence in Week One (week commencing 22nd February).
Week Two start: Weekly tutorials for all other final year units begin in Week Two (week
beginning 29th February). These units are: HGW402/612; HGW412/614; and HGW413/615.
You will sign up for a weekly tutorial for each unit through MyLO (MyLO for each unit
will be available on the first day of semester - Monday 22nd February). Tutorial classes will
have a cut off limit, so please sign up as soon as you can after the start of semester. There
will be no changes allowed for tutorial groups chosen. For details on rooms, see:
http://student-timetable.utas.edu.au/ and http://www.utas.edu.au/campuses/campus-maps
For Direct Practice 2 (HGW401/HGW611), the group work program is run as a block outside
of the standard teaching pattern and, as a participant of the group work program, you will be
required to attend one Friday of group work class in Semester 1. You must attend this
group work class to be eligible to pass the unit.
 Group work will be run on Friday 29th April; Friday 6th May; Friday 13th May; and Friday
20th May from 9am until 5pm on the Hobart and Launceston campuses. You will attend
only one of these days and the day that you are required to attend will be allocated
in the first tutorial (Week 1). Students on the Cradle Coast Campus are required to
attend a group work class on the Launceston campus on Friday 29th April.
 There are no weekly tutorials for DP2 in Weeks 9, 10, 11 and 12 but you will need to
attend one Friday group work class in Weeks 9, 10, 11 or 12.
