10th February, 2015 Dear final year Social Work student, On behalf of all staff we would like to welcome you into the final year of your Social Work course. We congratulate you on your successful completion of last year’s study, and look forward to working with you throughout 2015. This letter contains important information about your studies in 2015. Please read this letter carefully. Orientation There will be no orientation for final year students however there are several preparatory steps you will need to take to be ready for classes beginning in the week commencing 23rd of February 2015. To help you plan, we have included a checklist on the final page. Enrolments Please check your enrolment for the whole of 2015 is correct and up to date (all units for this year including practicum). In particular, check that you have been enrolled in HGW402 or 612 Community Work Practice. There have been problems with these units and some students will have a withdrawal from HGW402 or 612 Working with Communities for Change and then have a re-enrolment in HGW402 or 612 Community Work Practice. If this has happened to you THERE IS NOTHING YOU NEED TO DO. Simply note that you are in fact enrolled in HGW402 or 612 Community Work Practice. The unit was renamed late last year and unfortunately the system thought it was a new unit. We fixed the problem for most students but for some it may still be an issue. If the enrolment in these units seems odd to you please visit the student centre in person to check. Tutorials in final year units Tutorials for the units HGW401, HGW611 and HGW414 commence in week one (week commencing 23rd February). Tutorials for all other final year units begin in week two of semester one (week beginning 2nd March 2015). For Direct Practice 2 (HGW401 and HGW611) the group work program is run as a block outside of the standard teaching pattern and as a participant of the group work program, you will be required to attend only one Friday of group work classes in semester 1. You must attend this group work class to be eligible to pass the unit. Group work will be run on Friday 1st May; Friday 8th May and Friday 15th May from 9.00 am until 5 pm on the Hobart and Launceston campuses. You are expected to attend only one of these days and the day that you are required to attend will be allocated in the first tutorial. Students on the Cradle Coast Campus are required to attend a group work class on the Launceston campus on Friday 1st May. There are no tutorials for DP2 in weeks 9, 10, 11 and 12 but you will need to attend one Friday for group work in weeks 9, 10 or 11. *** Please note that ONLY THE TUTORIAL CLASSES LISTED ON MYLO WILL BE OFFERED. Kind regards, Dr Joselynn Baltra-Ulloa Lecturer International Students Portfolio 3 Checklist for starting the new academic year: I have visited the Social Work website for information. I have ensured I am correctly enrolled in all my 2015 units, particularly if I am a part-time student. I have viewed the timetable for the units that I am enrolled in for Semester 1 and understand that all tutorial classes on the timetable may not be available and that once I sign up I cannot change tutorial groups. I have logged on and checked MyLO for each of the units I am enrolled in for semester 1 to access information regarding the start of classes and the work I need to do in preparation for my first tutorial. I have signed up to tutorials via MyLO for each of the units I am enrolled in for Semester 1 and I understand that I have work to do in weeks 1 and week 2 which can be accessed via the unit outline available on MyLO.
