Job Description:
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Hydro One will be responsible for overseeing dayto-day operations championing the company’s “Good to Great” operational improvement program as well as being a key supporter and enabler of the implementation of the
Company’s strategic plan for future business growth. The COO will drive Hydro One’s strategic vision and management leadership at this critical juncture focusing on its transforming Hydro One into an operationally excellent company with strong commercial capabilities to support a growth mandate and a superior customer service aptitude.
The Chief Operating Officer will report to the CEO of Hydro One. The COO will work closely with the CEO and senior leadership team to ensure the company has the operating talent and capacity to manage the day to day business efficiently and safely while preparing to assume broader responsibility and scope as the company takes on new mandates and assets throughout North America.
The COO will be an active external representative for Hydro One primarily as it relates to the power industry, customers, suppliers, and other key stakeholders at the local, provincial and federal government level.
Requirements:
Proven capability as a “world-class” business executive with solid strategic, operational, and financial business skills; proved to be credible, transformational, visible, communicative, collaborative, adaptable, and team-oriented in terms of leadership style.
Well regarded by peers in the power industry as a role model for safety, environment and reliable operations, preferably in a unionized business; track record of integrating business plans with effective stakeholder, community and environmental programs.
Expertise in several of the following functional areas: operations; labor/union relations; business development; First Nations stakeholder relations; business planning and forecasting; strategic direction setting; major projects; financial management; acquisitions and integration of new businesses; large contractor/vendor management; and change management
Served as a Senior Officer of a large power/utility company with strong bias to candidates with deep transmission and distribution experience.
Has developed and executed a successful business and operations strategy in accordance with a clearly articulated, superior plan of implementation, and the assurance of meeting operational objectives with a sensitivity to aspects such as compliance, regulatory interfaces, international requirements, and cultural nuances.
Proven capability to attract, develop, motivate, and mentor outstanding and diverse leadership talent and then lead their efforts with high energy and enthusiasm to achieve/exceed stated business objectives.
Additional familiarity with complex business arrangements, such as international joint ventures and partnerships, outside investors/public market offerings, acquisitions, and divestitures is highly desired.
Knowledge of public company corporate governance and related board experience is highly desired in order to potentially succeed Mayo Schmidt as Chief Executive
Officer, when appropriate.
An undergraduate engineering or technical management degree is required.
This is a permanent, full-time position based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
