Plant Area Assistant
Job Description
Reporting to:
the Plant Area Manager
(If unavailable – the Garden Centre Manager)
Responsibility: to assist with the day to day operations of the Plant Area to ensure the
highest standards of service, housekeeping and performance are achieved. The aim is
to delight customers to achieve or exceed sales and gross profit targets while
minimising costs.
Main Duties
Customer Focus


To be ready to recommend plants, products and services to customers and
suggest items to meet their needs
To ensure all complaints are recorded and dealt with in line with company policy,
keeping the customer loyal to Langlands Garden Centre
Stock Control
 To liaise and confirm with the Plant Area Manager to operate an Open to Buy policy
and ensure that purchases are made within budget from approved suppliers. All
purchases must be authorised by the Plant Area Manager beforehand.
 To take early action on slow moving stock
 To regard stock as an investment – which needs to turn back into cash as quickly
as possible
 To record, monitor and control all wastage
 To take an active role in plant care including; watering, pruning and other
maintenance within the plant areas.
Display and Merchandising
Through consultation with the Plant Area Manager;
 Plan and construct inspirational displays in designated areas to boost sales
 Ensure that all items are clearly priced, using multi-buys and other techniques as
appropriate
 Use linked sales in displays to maximise sales
 Take an active part in planting pots and hanging baskets as part of the team
Signage / Point of Sale Material
 To ensure suitable customer information for each product – bed cards, benefit
signs, price cards
 To ensure all signs follow the company policy in style and content
Keeping Records and Paperwork
 To ensure that all relevant paperwork – orders, stock lists, staff records etc are up
to date at all times and accessible to others who need to use them. Ensure the
Plant Area Manager obtains copies.
Housekeeping
 To ensure all cleaning duties are regularly attended to
 Any area or rubbish which presents a Health and Safety hazard should be quickly
removed, notifying management if required.
Sales
 Correctly input sales information onto the EPOS/computer system and take action
as necessary to maximise sales performance/opportunities.
 Take a pro-active part in local marketing initiatives using knowledge of local Garden
Centres
 Control goods receiving operations to ensure adequate checks on quantity
 Ensure correct sales floor pricing
 Give feedback on buying trends
 As and when requested, conduct regular ‘on sale’ checks to identify correct prices
etc and take required action
 Conduct regular stock counts and assist in stock taking systems to maintain
accurate computer stockholding on a 3 month rolling cycle.
 Assist in flow of goods inward to the shop floor.
