Princeton Research in Experimental Social Science (PRESS)
The Politics Department’s new experimental working group, PRESS, has funds available in AY20132014 to award grants for human subject recruitment for undergraduate and graduate student
research projects. The subject recruitment grants will provide limited funding to pay human subjects
to participate in experimental studies. The grants are primarily available to students in the Politics
department, although students in other departments will be considered if their research project
addresses a question about politics broadly conceived.
Interested students should submit a proposal of no more than two double-spaced pages. We will
consider the proposals on a rolling basis starting on Sept. 24th. The proposal should include:





A clear research question pertaining to politics;
Initial hypotheses or expectations about an answer to the question;
Initial thoughts on causal mechanisms;
A clear description of the experimental design – namely, the intended treatment
conditions or interventions as well as outcome measures;
A description of the sample population of interest.
Students should also indicate whether and how their proposal would advance their independent
research (JP or senior thesis) or dissertation project. The amount of the grant will be determined by
the target number of subjects and the cost per subject for the requested sample.
Recipients of the grants will be required to attend monthly Experiments Workshop meetings; attend
skill-training seminars sponsored by PRESS; present and revise their research design before
collecting data; and complete data analysis and a write-up of findings by the end of the following
semester. In addition, grantees will be expected to create and present a research poster during a
poster session in the semester following the award.
We anticipate holding a second funding cycle early in the spring semester.
Please send proposals, or questions about proposals, to Elizabeth Nugent (enugent@princeton.edu).
Please send direct general inquiries about PRESS to Professors Ali Valenzuela
(aavalenz@princeton.edu) and Omar Wasow (owasow@princeton.edu).
