Australian Standard
In mid 2005 the Australian standards
relating to emergency lighting were
updated with several changes that bring
them more in line with international standards.
As of 1st May 2006, the revised standard is now
referenced by the Australian Building Code. This
means that all development applications considered
under the new code will need to use exit signs and
system designs that comply with:
• AS 2293.1-2005 Emergency escape lighting and exit signs for
buildings - System design, installation and operation.
• AS 2293.3-2005 Emergency escape lighting and exit signs for
buildings - Emergency escape luminaires and exit signs.
The most dramatic change to the standard, is the move from the use of the
word “EXIT” to the use of a pictograph on the face of exit sign diffusers. The
new standard also omits the use of an “arrows both ways” sign thereby requiring
the designer to indicate the evacuation path in one direction.
The 2005 standard also reviewed the viewing distances of different size pictographs and
stipulates that the maximum viewing distance of a sign must clearly be displayed on the
face of the diffuser.

Energy Efficient Lighting
Launched in 2000 the Stanilite Lumatec® cold cathode lamp combines
significant energy savings with the convenience of a user replaceable
ec®
lamp. Utilising the same technology as seen in LED screens, the Lumatec
lamp was recently selected for use in the Lighting Council’s new energyy
efficient lighting pilot programme beating competitive technologies
including LCD.
Significant features include:
Reliability
Lumatec® lamps do not burn out! Lamp burn out is the most common
cause for failure with conventional lamps, leaving the building owner
with a potential occupant safety risk.
Lumatec® lamps come with up to a 6 year (50,000 hour) rated lamp life.
In that same period a standard fluorescent lamp would need to be
replaced in excess of 6 times and hence has a much higher life cycle cost.
High operating temperatures are a minor issue for Lumatec® lamps
unlike LEDs and hence cold cathode lamp life is not compromised in
the tough Australian conditions.
Energy Savings
Stanilite Lumatec® cold cathode technology offers significant energy
savings (up to 300%) over competing 8/10W fluorescent lamps.
Not only do they produce a clean white light but they do it
efficiently unlike many of the LED technologies on the market.
Rugged Design
Despite it’s slim appearance, the Lumatec® lamp element has been
installed in a tough 7mm diameter outer protective glass housing
with rugged wedge shaped ends. This has been done to ensure
that anyone can replace the lamp without fear of breakage.

Nexus® Emergency Lighting Monitoring System
In 1993, the Stanilite Nexus® Emergency Lighting Monitoring system was released and took the
market by storm. Since then, it has become the system of choice when building designers
and owners are seeking to minimise maintenance costs and ensure the safety of building
occupants. High profile buildings such as Westfield shopping centres and Star City Casino
utilise the Nexus® system due to the many benefits it delivers and the through life
support offered by Thomas & Betts technical staff.
The Nexus LX® system communicates over a dedicated data cable which provides
both high speed communication and extreme reliability. Nexus® allows users to

GLOSSARY OF
TERMINOLOGY USED
Australian Standard AS2293
The standard that sets out the requirements for the design, installation and operation of emergency evacuation lighting
systems for buildings. The Standard is divided into 3 parts:
Part 1: System Design, Installation and Operation.
Part 2: Inspection and Maintenance.
Part 3: Emergency Luminaires and Exit Signs.
Back Plate
Opaque plastic plate designed to protect the back of a fitting and allow flush wall mounting.
Body
The body refers to the housing of the fitting without the back plate (where applicable) or diffuser. The body usually
contains the control gear.
Cold Cathode Lamps
Utilising the same technology as seen in LCD screens, cold cathode lamps
are an energy and cost saving alternative to standard fluorescent lamps.
Diffuser
Translucent part which fits to the face of a light fitting in order to soften or spread the light over a wide area.
Discharge Test
The current AS2293 standard dictates that an evacuation fitting must pass a 120 minute discharge test upon
commissioning and 90 minute tests conducted at 6 monthly intervals there after.
Dual Rate Charge
After an AC failure, the dual rate charger switches to a higher charging current for a timed period, then switches to a
lower rate.
Halogen Lamp
A specialised type of incandescent lamp used in downlight emergency luminaires and flood lights. They produce a crisp,
white light and allow precise light focusing.
IP Rating
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating indicates the degree of protection provided by an enclosure from solid objects & water.
The IP rating consists of 2 numbers eg IP65. The first number indicates the protection from solid objects such as dust.
The second number refers to the protection against water. The higher the numbers the better the degree of protection.
The maximum rating is IP68.
Maintained
A fitting where the emergency light source is energised at all times i.e during both normal and emergency operation.

TERMINOLOGY USED
Non Maintained
A fitting where the emergency light source only operates when there is a mains failure.
Peel Off Arrows
A versatile diffuser option offering a choice from either a “left from here”, “right from here”
or “arrow both ways” Exit by peeling off the arrow.
Photometric Classification
Classification based on the measurement of the luminous intensities of visible light sources. The classification is
used in conjunction with a photometric chart to determine luminaire spacings for given mounting heights.
Power Pack
A device for converting electrical supply to direct or alternating current at the correct voltage for a fitting.
Single Point Unit (SPU)
A fitting that stands alone (at a single point) and includes its own rechargeable battery and charger equipment.
When normal mains power fails, it automatically energises its emergency lamp until the power is restored or
the battery discharges.
Standard
A Standard fitting refers to an EXIT or PICTO - white on green.
Sustained (Combined Non Maintained)
A two lamp combination of normal lighting and non-maintained emergency lighting located side by side within the same
luminaire. One lamp is used for normal lighting and the other for emergency lighting. The light output is sustained even
when the power has failed.
Theatre Mask
A Theatre Mask fitting refers to EXIT or PICTO – green on black, suitable for low light
environments. Theatre mask exits do not have an emergency classification.
Variable Rate Charging
Varies the current according to the battery “charged” condition. The rate is higher
after an AC failure but reduces as battery capacity is restored.
Wire Guard
Protective wire casing offering the fittings lamp and/or difuse extra protection.

The Quickfit range of exits is Australia’s first
choice for quality signage. Featuring cold cathode
technology, the Quickfit Lumatec line up uses
the only proven long life lamp in the Australian
evacuation signage market. The Lumatec lamp
is not only energy efficient but only needs to be
replaced every 50,000 hours. The Quickfit also
features a unique steel slide and connect bracket
that provides strength, is compatible with all current
and previous models for easy retrofit and enables
quick and easy maintenance. Only the Quickfit
bracket needs to be installed during fitout, which
can greatly reduce damage.
The Quickfit is available in a complete range
including Theatre Mask and Nexus models to cater
for the entire project.

PICTOGRAPH
The Stanilite Quickfit® 18W Range of PICTO Exits
provides a premium quality exit for use in many
commercial and industrial applications where
conventional sized exits do not provide adequate
coverage. Featuring a larger Quickfit® slide &
connect mounting bracket enabling the fitting to
be installed on the wall or ceiling with the same
diffusers. The power socket in the bracket uses large
16mm power terminals enabling a TPS junction at
the bracket, all covered by a full length protective
mains cover.

The Stanilite Quickfit® 18W Jumbo Range of Exits
provides a premium quality exit for use in many
commercial and industrial applications where
conventional sized exits do not provide adequate
coverage. Featuring a larger Quickfit® slide &
connect mounting bracket enabling the fitting to
be installed on the wall or ceiling with the same
diffusers. The power socket in the bracket uses
large 16mm power terminals enabling a TPS
junction at the bracket, all covered by a full length
protective mains cover.

EMERGENCY
Stanilite Spitfire® recessed emergency range has
been designed to be as unobtrusive as practically
possible. The Spitfire® is available in two lamp
head sizes of 85mm or 141mm, pre-cabled with a
universal 6-way lamp head lead connector assembly

Note In a single lamp emergency luminaire the spacings in the C0 plane are proportional to Fig 1. In a twin lamp emergency
luminaire one tube is maintained in emergency mode. As a result the second “mains only” tube interferes with the light
distribution in several planes. For this reason, all twin lamp fittings have C0, C90 and C180 classifications as per Fig 2.

AS2293 DESIGN
CONSIDERATIONS
The AS2293 evacuation lighting standard looks at an installation in two parts. Firstly illuminated Exit signs to indicate
a path of egress (escape) and secondly emergency lighting to provide a minimum light level throughout an area to
enable occupants to transverse through that area. While emergency lighting is not required to operate while mains
power is available, all Exits must be luminated regardless of mains connection.
Emergency fittings are available in several different types to suit various applications. Each fitting has a photometric
classification that is used with a photometric chart to determine spacings for given mounting heights. The resultant
spacings provide the required standard minimum of 0.2Lux of emergency lighting in the determine area. For large
areas multiple fittings are simply mounted in a grid determined by the calculated spacings. Batten fittings have
different spacings in the “X” (C0 & C180) and “Y” (C90) planes due to the shape of the lamp and reflective surfaces. It
is important that batten’s are therefore correctly orientated.
