2014 -2015 Course Syllabus for 8th Grade Concepts of Engineering & Technology Teacher: Mr. Patrick H. Alvarez Room: 308 Conference Period: 2:15 - 2:45 Campus: Athlos Leadership Academy E-mail: palvarez@jubileeacademic.org Course Description Students will employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of engineering design problems. Students will develop problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges. Students will also learn how to document their work and communicate their solutions. Course Overview 8th Grade 1st 6 weeks: • Procedures, Rules and Limits • Development of Engineering • Society and Ethics 2nd 6 weeks: • Technical Communications • Safety In the Workplace rd 3 6 weeks: • Teamwork • Problem Solving, Design and Modeling • Engineering Systems th 4 6 weeks • Engineering Systems (continued) • Electronics 5th 6 weeks • Electronics (continued) • Biotechnology th 6 6 weeks • Fields of Engineering and Technology • Team Project Classroom Rules and Procedures 2014 -2015 Course Syllabus for 8th Grade Concepts of Engineering & Technology Each Student is expected to: • Show respect for others • Behave in a responsible manner • attend all classes regularly and on time • be prepared for class with required materials • follow the district dress code policy • obey all campus and classroom rules • Adherer to the requirements of the Student Code of Conduct Homework and Testing: Any incomplete class work will be given for homework Monday thru Thursday. Tests will be on Fridays. (Schedule may change for unforeseeable circumstances.) Retesting will take place upon student failure on a major assessment administered during a six weeks grading period. Six Weeks Tests and Semester Exams do not qualify for retesting. Retesting must occur within (10) days and may raise the score only to a maximum of (70). Make-Up Work: When a student is absent, he/she must make arrangements for make-up work on the day they return to school. The teacher and student can decide when the work is due. Late Work: All work is due on the assigned date at the beginning of class. Late work may be turned in up to one class day late for a maximum grade of 79. Work turned in two class days late will receive a maximum grade of 50. Work that is more than two class days will not be accepted, and students will receive a zero for that assignment. Cheating: Cheating is interpreted as a procedure which involves the unauthorized giving or receiving help, offering or seeking aid, or the use of material prepared in advance for use on an assessment. Cheating also involves books, notes or technology in any form being used during an examination without the permission of the teacher. The penalty is a zero (0) on that work, and a failure for the semester (which will be recorded as a zero (0) in the teacher’s grade book) if cheating occurs a second time during the same semester. I have read all policies and procedures on the Concepts of Engineering and Technology Syllabus.
