Role Title: Research Coordinator Duration: One Term (with the possibility of continuing on into future terms) Open to: All students at Oxford University Application Process: Written Time per week (estimated): 3-‐5 Hours Details: Our collaborative research projects are OxPolicy’s flagship scheme for engaging people in policy. For this we naturally require people capable of leading a team of up ten researchers in a specific policy topic. This is a serious role, but one in which you will gain almost unrivalled experience useful in a huge range of contexts. Your role would start off immediately working with us to decide on the topic of the research you would like to lead. You need to suggest one topic (or more, if you wish) in your application with some detail about areas for further investigation. These must be topics broadly related to social policy (eg human trafficking would count, infrastructure would not). We do not expect detailed knowledge of the policy topics you will lead at this stage, and you need no prior connection (eg through study or work experience) to with the topic but an interest and idea of how to go about researching the issue. This suggestion must include a preliminary research question, a list of possible sources to begin research with, and if possible, a gap in the existing literature that our policy research could fulfil. We will expect you to inform yourselves over the vacation period so that you are able to lead a group of students competently. This might involve reading a few articles or think tank reports in the relevant topic, or using the wider internet or any contacts you may have at or beyond the university. This may sound intimidating, but we will be on hand to support you organizationally and organize post-‐graduate and academic led advice. In the past, our coordinators have had very little prior knowledge and put together great projects. Most important in your application are your personal qualities. Our research is student led in a rather unique context, and as such we value adaptability and willingness to work in unfamiliar contexts very highly. You should have some experience in a position in which you have shown leadership, and be able to demonstrate that you have acquired skills in areas such as independent research, time management and writing or editing. The Application Process: 1. Send your research proposal according to the bullet points below to director@oxpolicy.co.uk 2. We will then reply to all promising candidates for a short informal interview with the incumbent Directorate. The interview is informal and allows us to get to know the applicant a bit better. The written application gives you the chance to compose your thoughts on the position and gives us a bit more detail. The application should be split under these three headings but has no overall word limit: • Details of your proposed research topic (including the policy area(s) to be examined, potential research questions, and strategies to approach the research question) and why/how this topic interests you • Any experience you have in policy and/or research contexts • A time when you have shown initiative and/or leadership If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to send an email to director@oxpolicy.co.uk.
