Consumers around the world need to be sure that electrical and
electronic devices and their components will not endanger them even
when damaged. Therefore, manufacturers must place the highest
priority on minimizing danger and protecting human life and health.
One of the best ways to ensure fire safey in electrical components
lies in Underwriters Laboratories UL94 Standard and complying with
it is much easier when UL-compliant masterbatches from Clariant are
specified.
Clariant has over 30 years of experience supporting customers seeking UL compliance. Our
global listing of over 17,000 materials ensures quick availability of the right masterbatch
to help speed new products to market. A wide range of color and cost options – including
natural plus solutions – are available to provide maximum flexibility. And its all backed
by project management and technical support around the world through more than 50
manufacturing sites in more than 30 different countries.

High-impact colors and cutting-edge design are hugely
important to the success of today’s sleek, modern electrical
and electronic products. At the same time, manufacturers
also need to consider product safety and regulatory
compliance. Clariant can help in both these critical areas.
UL Compliant Masterbatches
The IEC 60695-2-11/12/13, known as the
Glow-Wire (GW) test, and the UL-94, are
established norms in the Electrical &
Electronic (E&E) industry. The UL94
standard, which was originally a national
standard in the USA, is now globally
established to classify plastic products and
how they burn. Both norms offer plastics
manufacturers a guarantee that the fire
resistance properties of the product have
been tested and fulfill the current standards.
Through compliance with UL guidelines
and the GW-test, the risk of fire can be
minimized in case of a failure in the
conductive part. These standards apply to,
among other things, electric kettles, relay
covers or computer connectors. Household
appliances and toys, which are increasingly
being fitted with E&E elements, are also
tested against these norms to offer increased
fire safety.

REMAFIN® AND RENOL® UL Compliant
In order to have a masterbatch recognized by
UL, the following conditions must be met:
· The color-concentrate producer must be
recognized by UL
· The polymer, generic or specific, should be
recognized as well
· The recognition of the material combination (base resin + color-concentrate)
should be listed in the QMSQ2 file of the
concentrate producer.
· The specification limits set in the QMQS2
file must be respected if the UL94
recognition is to apply to the final plastic
part.
The Clariant portfolio of products for
E&E applications allows fast, cost-efficient
project management combined with all
the advantages of in-house coloration.
This comprehensive service provided by
Clariant meets customer requirements and,
thus, improves the safety for consumers of
electrical and electronic devices and their
components.
