Hull History Centre: Bernard Floud MP U DFL Papers of Bernard Floud MP 1923-1969 Biographical background: Born in Epsom,Surrey in March 1915 he was the son of Sir Francis Floud, High Commissioner to Canada. He went to Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk before attending Wadham College, Oxford. Floud served in the army between 1939-1942 before joining the Ministry of Information until the end of the war when he moved to the Board of Trade, leaving the Civil Service in 1951 to become a farmer in Ongar, Essex. In 1955 he was employed by Granada as a television programme company executive. Floud joined the Labour Party in 1937, and was a Labour Councillor on both a Parish and District Council in the 1950s. He represented Labour at the Chelmsford (1955) and Hemel Hempstead (1959) consistuencies before winning the Acton constituency in October 1964 and increased his marority in 1966. Floud was identified as a Soviet agent by Anthony Blunt and in October 1967 he was interviewed by Peter Wright of MI5, as part of the security clearance necessary to become a junior minister. He committed suicide the following day (10 Oct 1967).
