Purpose This theory-based unit standard is for people who work in the industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: seaming; and finishing work, in the industrial textile fabrication industry.

2 Definition

Industry refer to those practices and procedures commonly used as standard procedures to produce items of acceptable merchantable quality in the industrial textile fabrication industry.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Seam types and their uses are described in accordance with textbook descriptions and industry requirements.

Range plain single seam, top sewn seam, double top sewn seam, run and fell seam, folded overlap seam, flat seam, round seam.

Seaming procedures are described in accordance with textbook descriptions.

Range plain single seam, top sewn seam, double top sewn seam, run and fell seam, folded overlap seam, flat seam, round seam.

1.3 Procedures and reasons for adding reinforcements to seams are described in accordance with textbook descriptions and industry requirements.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of finishing work in the industrial textile fabrication industry.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Hemming is described in accordance with textbook description.

Range single hem on selvedge edge, double turned hem.

Bias binding is described in accordance with textbook description.

Procedures for attaching ropes are described in accordance with textbook descriptions and industry requirements.

Range includes but is not limited to – slip knots, lashing whipping; splicing

– eye splice, back splice, short splice, long splice.
