BIOVIA EXPERIMENT DATASHEET BIOVIA Experiment is a first-in-class research and development-focused laboratory informatics system that enables R&D organizations to more efficiently manage, analyze and mine knowledge from their scientific experiments and data. BIOVIA Experiment offers proven capabilities to reduce research costs and accelerate product development in chemicals, bioprocessing, catalysis, food & beverages, formulations and other applications. GET MORE VALUE FROM LABORATORY DATA The diversity and complexity of the modern materials laboratory make it difficult to transform scientific data into knowledge that informs decisions. Because of this, up to 40% of all experiments run are actually repeats of work that’s been done before but can’t be found or evaluated. BIOVIA Experiment improves laboratory efficiency and productivity, accelerates time to innovation and supports sustainability strategies by improving: • “What experiments have I already run using materials in this concentration, under these conditions?” • “What do the results tell us? How do they compare with other similar experiments?” • “What experiments should I run next to answer my questions and achieve my goals?” • Experiment Planning – Supports knowledge-driven and statistically-designed experiments to minimize cost and maximize effectiveness in the lab. • Experiment Orchestration – Tracks samples through their workflow, generating work requests when the next step is ready to execute, promoting visibility and efficiency in distributed teams. Complex workflows are also supported, including sample branching and skipping of steps. • Experiment Data Gathering – Collects data as soon as it is produced from instruments or by bench technicians. Data is immediately and automatically structured, eliminating tedious manual piecing together of data from different sources. • Experiment Results Processing – Provides configurable report templates with integrated charting, scatter plots and interactive reporting options. Reports can be invoked during experiment workflows (to assist with decision making) or at the end. • Data Mining and Knowledge Generation – Collates all completed experiment plans and result data to build an invaluable corporate knowledge asset that can be instantly searched and mined. Improved data availability and enhanced opportunity to reuse data minimize experiment repetition. Most laboratories engaged in researching and developing chemically-based materials have a variety of instruments and systems in place that create and “manage” experimental data with varying degrees of effectiveness. This distributed information environment makes it very difficult to establish the trends, patterns and relationships between experiments and their results that make the data valuable to store in the first place – leaving scientists unable to answer basic questions such as: Even with LIMS and other laboratory data management systems in place, scientists struggle to find and interpret information from previous experiments. This inability to learn from previous efforts causes up to 40% of all experiments to be repeated needlessly, wasting resources, time and money. BIOVIA Experiment works with laboratory systems and equipment to gather and structure data. The approach is to track each sample through its entire lifecycle, from its creation or acquisition through all of the physical and performance tests performed on it. A complete picture of each sample is built up in a single IT system. This approach reveals trends and patterns that inform scientific decisions and experiment planning in a way that accelerates R&D projects greatly. Figure 1: BIOVIA Experiment tracking three samples through different workflows consisting of combinations of preparation, characterization and testing steps. Figure 2: How BIOVIA Experiment structures experiments from high-level, step-type definition down to individual step execution PLAN AND DESIGN EXPERIMENTS Using BIOVIA Experiment, scientists can create new experiment plans or derive them from templates of previous experiments. The scientists can define the experiment workflow (sequence of processes), input parameters for processes and the number and origin of the samples that will pass through the workflow. To answer questions and develop materials quickly and efficiently, it is critical to minimize the number of samples and therefore the overall cost of experimentation. BIOVIA Experiment supports ad hoc experiment planning as well as statistical “Design of Experiments” (DoE) tools that help scientists design experiments efficiently. As well as providing the ability to find and reuse the results of previous experiments, BIOVIA Experiment enables planning and design of new experiments that have maximum impact with minimum cost. Equipment operators receive clear and consistent instructions within experiment plans and otherwise work with instrumentation exactly as they do today. The system’s experiment dashboard shows progress of all samples in the experiment plan. Figure 5: A typical step validation wizard in BIOVIA Experiment Experiment data is uploaded to BIOVIA Experiment via direct import from instrument files, from a database or through manual upload. Scientists can leverage BIOVIA Pipeline Pilot capabilities to create “validation wizards” that take users through a sequence of visualizations of recently uploaded data designed to help them determine if the process has worked and the data is correct. Visualizations typically include line plots, scatter plots and tables that help to improve data quality and consistency in experiment execution. The system features a highly flexible search engine based on material descriptors for all the samples in the database. Categories of descriptors available for single or multi-criteria search include but are not limited to: Benefits of BIOVIA Experiment include improved laboratory efficiency and productivity, faster time to innovation and scientific/laboratory operations that support customers’ sustainability strategies. These benefits are delivered through: • Input parameters • Output data • Sample pedigree (parent, siblings, children, raw materials, reagent batches used) • Sample origin (who made it, which project) • Workflow (sequence, number of times through a process) BIOVIA Experiment provides comprehensive tools to visualize experiment data including tables, histograms, scatter plots and more. Plug-in capabilities also enable integration with thirdparty analysis tools such as Microsoft Excel® spreadsheets and popular visualization software. BIOVIA Experiment also supports statistical data mining, enabling scientists to spot trends and patterns that speed the materials innovation process. Examples include principle components analysis (correlations between parameters), factor analysis (correlations between parameters), cluster analysis (sample groupings) and predictive models (statisticallygenerated suggestions on “next best lead”). • Extraction and collection of descriptive information from multiple data sources such as LIMS, spreadsheets and databases • Better, more informed experiment plans • Faster experiment execution • Faster analysis of experimental data • Fewer repeat experiments • More scientific insight and value from all experimental data BIOVIA UNIFIED LAB MANAGEMENT BIOVIA Experiment is a component of the BIOVIA Unified Lab Management suite, a comprehensive software offering that optimizes operations, maximizes quality and drives innovation.
