APM Terminals Named “International Terminal Operator
of the Year”
-
Containerisation International’s 2012 Award presented in
London is the second major industry accolade of the year;
Port of Salalah, operated by APM Terminals, wins for CSR.
London – APM Terminals was named “International Terminal Operator of the Year” for
2012 at the annual Containerisation International awards luncheon, with the company’s
“ongoing investment programs at its terminals and its ability to implement and adapt
very effectively global safety, security and environmental guidelines at the local level”
cited by the judging panel, as well as APM Terminals’ Global Terminal Network’s “success
in combining development with continuous improvements in its CSR and environmental
policies”.
"We are honored to win this award, and will work even harder to provide all of our
customers with safe, fast and reliable services to remain worthy of this recognition",
stated Kim Fejfer, CEO of APM Terminals.
The Port of Salalah, a major transshipment hub located on the Gulf of Oman in the
Arabian Sea operated by APM Terminals, was named winner of the Containerisation
International 2012 Award for Corporate Social Responsibility.
During the 12 month qualifying period from June 2011 to May 2012, APM Terminals’
global port and terminal operations continued to expand, focusing in particular on new
infrastructure investment in underserved high-growth emerging markets. In July 2011,
APM Terminals assumed control of the North Terminal at the Port of Callao, Peru, and in
November, Cai Mep International Container Terminal, the only deep-water facility in
Vietnam, in which APM Terminals has a 49% share, was officially opened. In January
2012, APM Terminals also took over container operations at the Port of Gothenburg,
Sweden.
In August 2011, APM Terminals signed a concession contract with the government of
Costa Rica to develop a new container terminal at the Port of Moin, and in December was
named winner of the concession to develop a new deepwater terminal at the Port of
Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico.
In 2011, APM Terminals Port and Inland Services operations reduced CO2 production by
16.5% per TEU. A major initiative to convert the company’s fleet of Rubber-Tire Gantry
(RTG) cranes from diesel to electric-power was also begun. The RTG electrification
program has been projected to reduce overall terminal operations’ CO2 emissions by
20%.
The Port of Salalah’s award was accepted by CEO Peter Ford. Salalah, in which APM
Terminals holds a 30% share, conducts a variety of local community outreach medical
and educational programs. The port is now undergoing an expansion which will double
the quay length, and increase dry bulk capacity to 20 million tons, and liquid bulk
capacity to 6 million tons annually.

Operator of the Year” Award in 2006.
