Changes to APM 304
APM 304, POLICY ON TERMINAL DEGREES, was sent to the President for approval and change
from interim status by the Academic Senate in May 2013. President Welty has approved the policy as
amended prior to interim status. The following changes have been made to the policy:

Amendment to item 1 to specify that a terminal degree is “normally” required for appointment to
a tenure track position.
Amendment to item 2 that specifies exceptions to the requirement of earned doctorates or other
recognized terminal degrees will be rare.
Amendment to item 3 clarifying situations in which multiple degrees may be considered.
Amendment to item 4 noting ABD exception.
