Designed with the ‘first time’ soft start user in mind, the CSXi incorporates a number of unique features aimed specifically at simplifying the installation and commissioning processes while also significantly reducing installed cost. In order to achieve this the CSXi is provided with Equi-Vec™ balanced vector control technology, a comprehensive array of motor and system protection features including in-built bypass contactor and in-built thermal overload with adjustable trip class, all as standard. In-buil t protectmotor ion Interna l contacbypass tor CSXi-007-V4-C1 In operation, the CSXi provides smooth acceleration and deceleration of the motor and connected load, thereby minimising the electrical and mechanical stresses that would otherwise be encountered through the use of electromechanical motor starting methods. Equi-Vec™ technology 6 Equi-Vec™ balanced vector control is state-of-the-art technology developed to enhance the performance of 2 phase soft start controllers. By balancing the current vectors during motor starting, the CSXi is able to provide 3 phase like performance while maintaining the commercial and mechanical advantages normally associated with compact soft starter technology. Standard starting modes Constant current/current limit soft start The constant current start mode is ideally suited to highly inertial applications. Due to the nature of this starting mode highly inertial loads are brought up to speed in the shortest time possible, thereby minimising thermal stresses on the motor. In-built motor & system protection The CSXi provides a comprehensive array of motor and system protection features to further satisfy the most demanding of industrial motor control applications. This eliminates the need to purchase/install additional devices, thus acting to reduce installed cost. In-built protection features are summarised as follows; ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Motor overload (adjustable thermal model) Phase loss / Imbalance Excess start time Phase sequence / rotation Motor thermistor input Power circuit fault (shorted SCR, supply fault) Supply frequency Communications failure Trip contact LED healthy / fault indicators In-built bypass contactor To further reduce installation complexity and cost the CSXi is provided with in-built bypass contactor as standard. This eliminates the need for external bypass contactors and/or the need to force ventilate enclosures. 6 - 12 Timed current ramp soft start The timed current ramp start mode allows the user to set minimum starting current, maximum starting current and a start ramp time. This method of starting is proven in applications that present a variable starting torque requirement, for example a conveyor that at times may start fully loaded and at other times will be lightly loaded, or to extend the start time of loads that easily break away. Pt A 2007 Sec 06 pp1-21 16/11/06 Refer catalogue CSX-C 11:46 AM Page 13 Electronic motor starters CSXi Series to 110 kW Standard stopping modes Excess start time protection Timed voltage ramp soft stop The CSXi will trip if the starting time exceeds the motor’s safe starting time characteristics, ensuring the motor is not subjected to high currents for an excessive period of time. This feature will also ensure the load is not jammed or too large at start up. During soft stop, the CSXi gradually decreases output voltage over a user selected ramp time enabling driven machines to be stopped gently. This is of particular advantage in applications where machinery and or product can be adversely affected by sudden stopping. Examples include pumps and conveyors. Notes: The soft stop feature can be disabled by selecting a ‘0’ stop time. The soft start and soft stop ramp times are independently adjustable. Supply frequency error The supply frequency during start and run may vary under some conditions including generator power situations. The CSXi monitors supply frequency to ensure that it is not operating outside its design parameters thus preventing damage to itself and the motor. Phase sequence protection Phase sequence protection is of particular advantage in applications that are rotation direction sensitive such as pumps, compressors etc. The CSXi will monitor the incoming phase rotation before application of power to the motor to prevent incorrect rotation of the motor. This feature is user configurable to fwd or any phase sequence application. Communications failure Protection features further explained Electronic motor overload protection with user adjustable motor thermal model. The CSXi soft starter provides built-in motor overload protection with adjustable thermal model as standard. The thermal model allows the user to select the tripping curve which most closely resembles the thermal withstand curve of the connected motor. This eliminates nuisance motor overload tripping, while maximising machine up-time and plant productivity. User adjustable Motor FLC and thermal model via rotary switches located on the front panel. Motor thermistor protection In order to further enhance motor protection, the CSXi provides an input for direct connection of your motor thermistors. Phase imbalance protection The CSXi offers phase imbalance protection as standard. During both start and run, the CSXi monitors motor current through its internal current transformers. In order to prevent motor damage, burn out or over heating, the CSXi will trip if an imbalance exceeds specified limits or a phase loss occurs. Power circuit protection Prior to the application of power to the motor but following a start command, the CSXi monitors its line and load connection and the integrity of its SCRs. Should any abnormality be detected, the CSXi will trip thus ensuring the motor is not compromised. Automated plants utilise the communications features of the CSXi. Connection integrity is vital to maintain control and protection of the motor. The CSXi monitors the communications link to maintain supervisory control and displays a fault when a break occurs. CSXi Set-up Although the CSXi offers broad functionality, set-up is a simple process. A series of clearly labelled rotary switches is provided to ensure accurate and repeatable settings are easily made. Simply rotate these to the desired position (no need for a user manual) and you’re ready to go. Fault & status information Fault and status information is provided by on-board ‘flash coded’ LEDs. In addition, the RCM-02 remote operator is available for those who may require/benefit from remote control and monitoring.
