Component Recognition
I NTERNATIONAL S AFETY C ERTIFICATION S ERVICES
Many multinational manufacturing companies mandate using
only UL Recognized Components in their products as a way
to streamline the certification process and circumvent potential
international component-acceptance issues. Several UL
Component Standards are already internationally based,
meaning no further testing is required on the component
after it receives UL Component Recognition. This helps
manufacturers get their products to market faster.
UL Recognized Components are globally accepted
Many UL standards for components are based on International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) standards, which means they are readily accepted in the global marketplace with no
further testing or evaluation required. UL’s IEC-based standards for components include:
n
UL 60691, based upon IEC 60691 (thermal links)
n
UL 60730, based upon IEC 60730 (controls)
n
UL 61058, based upon IEC 61058 (appliance switches)
In addition to being based on IEC component standards, many other categories under UL’s
Component Program are generally accepted as part of the IECEE CB Scheme with no further
testing required. Although these standards are not officially harmonized with the IECEE,
they are based on test methods for IEC standards:
n
UL 94 and UL 746 (plastics)
n
UL 796 (printed wiring boards)
n
UL 507 (internal fans)
n
UL 248 (non-user-replaceable AC fuses)
n
UL 758 (internal wiring, interconnecting cables)
n
UL 1642 (lithium batteries)
n
UL 1863 (modular jacks/connectors/plugs)
n
UL 1077 (supplementary protectors)
n
UL 1059 (terminal blocks used for internal wiring)

UL components for the Canadian market
Components covered under UL’s Canadian Component program comply with all required
Canadian component safety requirements. Canada’s largest safety certification organization
has a published policy to accept UL-certified components in the end-products it evaluates
for the Canadian marketplace. Manufacturers that employ UL Recognized Components gain
maximum flexibility for accessing both the Canadian and U.S. market.
