DRY FILM THICKNESS GAUGES
Three types of dry film thickness gages are available:
• Magnetic pull-off, (Type I) for measuring non-magnetic coating thickness over ferrous metal surfaces.
• Electronic magnetic flux, constant pressure probe (Type II) for measuring non-magnetic coating thickness over
ferrous metal surfaces.
• Eddy current gages for measuring non-magnetic coating thickness or non-ferrous metal surfaces.
Helpful Hints - Dry Film Thickness Gages
• Calibration of magnetic gages should be done in accordance with SSPC-PA2, “SSPC method for measurement of dry paint thickness with magnetic gages.”
• Verify calibration of Type I gages before, during and after use, using NIST standard plates.
• Exposed magnets naturally attract iron fillings, steel grit, etc. Assure the magnet is free of contamination,
including paint.
• Vibrations may prematurely lift the magnet from the surface, giving erroneous readings.
• Dial gages are susceptible to “human error” by continuing to turn the dial beyond the point the magnet lifts
from the surface.
• Calibration of constant pressure probe gages should be done in accordance with SSPC-PA2, “SSPC Method
for Measurement of Dry Coating Thickness with Magnetic Gages”.
• Verify calibration of Type II gages before, during, and after use, using either traceable standards (test blocks) or

plastic shims (reference the manufacturer’s instructions).
Many electronic gages can be susceptible to flux leakage problems within a few inches from edges or corners.
Eddy current gages for use on non-ferrous metals are calibrated using only the plastic shim method.
Constant pressure probe gages are less susceptible to vibrations.

internal and external fusion bonded powder coatings, internal and external liquid

Our head office and shop facility is located in Nisku, Alberta, Canada. For maximum efficiency our 30,000 square foot
facility is equipped with four 7.5 tonne overhead cranes, with craneways extending fully outside the building. Every
project is inspected by CSI’s full time NACE Certified Coating Inspector at critical “hold” points, as defined in our
Quality Assurance Program, assuring the end product meets specification and is delivered on time. CSI maintains all
records on each project for review and audit when requested.
CSI’s complete fleet of mobile equipment allows us to prepare the surface, coat, cure,
and inspect coating applications at any site. Typical jobs include internal epoxy and/
or fiberglass reinforced linings and external coating of vessels and large diameter
storage tanks. CSI also owns large indirect-fired heaters needed during cold weather
jobs, so CSI can perform coatings in any season, on any size of storage tank.
