The Qatari enigma

The Qatari National Team is almost unknown on the world stage. But this lack of experience could also be their biggest asset in a very competitive group.

This small country from the Persian Gulf is a newcomer at the world basketball level - just as much as they were in Asia only a few months ago. Before 2000, Qatar had appeared only once in the Asian Championships, finishing 16th in 1991. The emergence of Qatari basketball really started in 1996, when the Junior National Team won the silver medal in the Asian Championships for Junior Men. They repeated the feat two years later, qualifying for the 1999 FIBA U19 World

Championship in Portugal. Qatar finished a decent 10th place at that event, and scouts from all over the world discovered Qatar's best player - Yaseen Ismail. The forward finished second in the

MVP voting - behind future NBA star Andrei Kirilenko of Russia - after posting 25 points and 12 rebounds per game. In 2000, the same generation dominated the Asian Championship for Young

Men and won the gold medal. The following year, they finished 10th again at the FIBA U21 World

Championship 2001 in Japan. The Qatari senior team was similar to the junior’s squad - built around a nucleus formed by Ismail, guard Daoud Mosa Daoud and centre Hashim Zaidan Zaidan.

The 2.08 m centre led the tournament in blocked shots and finished third in rebounds. In 2001, the golden generation made its debut with the Senior National Team and qualified for the Asian

Championships for the first time since 1991. Despite being dominated by South Korea and Syria,

Qatar eventually defeated Japan to finish fifth. That was a promising performance for the emergent Qatari team.

The hiring of American coach Joey Stiebing set the second stage of the Qatari basketball’s rise.

The former University of New Orleans head coach provided discipline and a college basketball style of play, featuring hustling defence that fits particularly well with the physical abilities of his players. Stiebling's Qatari squad is full of very athletic players, mirroring more African players than Asian ones. Under Stiebing's tutelage, Qatar play a solid defence backed up by efficient shooting. They also show a lot of energy and aggressiveness at both ends of the floor. The head coach took advantage of some minor Asian competitions to create team chemistry and test a number of players and bring depth to his squad. Still, despite not using their best players, Qatar won the FIBA Stankovic Cup in November 2004; the Gulf Cup in December 2004 and the West

Asian Games in December 2005. The Qatar National Team was not the only one to benefit from the rise of basketball in the country. Some of the nation's best players, led by national superstar

Ismail, helped Al Rayyan Sports Club to capture the Asian Club Championship twice - in 2003 and

2005.

Last summer, Qatar hosted the 2005 FIBA Asia Championships and wrote history. They reached the semi-finals once again but were beaten by Lebanon. Nevertheless, they qualified for the 2006

FIBA World Championship by knocking off South Korea to take the bronze medal.

This is the first time that a Persian Gulf state has qualified for the World Championships. And despite a draw which has placed them in a very tough group with Brazil, Greece, Lithuania,

Australia and Turkey, Qatar want to make the Gulf region proud.

Stiebing's nucleus of the golden generation is Ismail, who is 26 years old, and 24-year-old

Daoud. Talented young players have joined that core, including point guard Saad Abdulrahman

Ali (21 years old) and forwards Khalid Suliman Abdi (19), Ali Turki Ali (24) and Erfan Ali Saeed

(22). All National Team members play in Qatar and obviously will miss experience on the world stage despite playing in several competitions in Asia.

24/07/06

P 4/14

Another missing element is height, with no player taller than 2.08 metres. Like Zaidan, the team's tallest player, Qatar's front court players focus on their defensive assignments. The problem is that Stiebling's offence is not very well balanced.

That’s why Qatar have struggled against teams with strong big men, such as China's Yao Ming

(2.28 m), South Korea's Ha Seung-Jin (2.21 m) and Joe Vogel (2.12 m) of Lebanon. To resolve this issue, the Qatari Basketball Federation has been in contact with Jabari Smith, a seven footer by American origin who played briefly in the NBA. Al Rayyan’s American point guard Ben Walker could also be naturalized and join the national team to strengthen the backcourt.

Qatari fans do not see the 2006 FIBA World Championship as just an accomplishment. More so, they see it as an opportunity to gain experience in international competition. The squad is still very young and could qualify for an international competition again in the future. Then they will be more mature and competitive.

COACH: J OSEPH A NTHONY STIEBING III

Nationality: USA

Date of Birth: -.

Place of birth: -.

International career: Head coach – Qatari National Team (2004-06).

Joey Stiebing graduated from Louisiana State University in 1985. He didn’t play basketball in college but learned a lot about coaching by working with long-time coach Dale Brown. After coaching five years in high school, Stiebing served as an assistant for seven years, under wellknown coaches Tic Price and Tim Floyd before being named head coach at the University of New

Orleans in 1997. In four years there, he established a 57-58 record and was even selected Sun

Belt Conference Coach of the Year … just two weeks before being fired in 2001. Stiebing was working for a financial services company when he was asked to become the Qatari National Team head coach in January 2003. After three years as coach, he has provided some discipline and the intensive defence that made him successful at the college level.

Place of birth: Doha.

Club Team 2005-06: AL ARABI SPORTS CLUB (Qatar-Division 1)

Career: Al Arabi (Qatar-Division 1, 2003-06).

Khalid Masoud Al Nasr is one of the most experienced players of the team. He was already a member of the Qatari National Team before Stiebing’s era. He will compete with Saad

Abdulrahman Ali for the reserve point guard spot. Al Nasr is not as quick as his younger teammates, but he is more experienced after playing in three consecutive Asian Championships and competing at the 1999 FIBA U19 World Championship. Al Nasr is a playmaker with a passfirst mentality. He is not much of a scorer, but he knows how to control the tempo of the game.

Career: Al Rayyan (Qatar-Division 1, 1999-2006).

Mohammed Orabi Al Jabri didn’t make the team for the 2005 FIBA Asia Championship. But at 28 he is the oldest player on the team, and he competed for the Asia Championship in 2001 and

2003. Joey Stiebing didn’t count on him last summer but re-called him in December to be the captain of the team that claimed the gold medal at the West Asian Games. Al Jabri didn’t see a lot of playing time but had a key role serving as the leader of a very young team. Playing the point, he is a true playmaker and a floor general. He had the opportunity to show his skills serving as Al

Rayyan’s point guard. With his team, he won three national titles and two Asian Club

Championships.

Saad Abdulrahman Ali usually plays for As Sadd in the Qatari League but has been loaned to Al

Rayyan to help the team win the 2005 Asian Club Championship. At 21, he is still very young but has had the opportunity to show his skills at the last two FIBA Asia Championships. He is a very quick point guard who likes to run the floor, especially on fast breaks. He can pass the ball very well or score - either by driving to the hoop or shooting from long distance. He is be the perfect compliment to Daoud Mosa Daoud at point guard. Division 1, 2005-06).

Ben Walker received a last-minute Qatari passport to join the national team. He is a muchexperienced globetrotter after playing on four different continents and being named an All-Star in

Latvia. This season, Walker played a key role in Al Rayyan's triumph in the Qatari League. He is a quick and athletic guard able to score and pass the ball. His strength also enables him to help his team under the boards to grab some rebounds. Walker is also a good shooter and a decent defender. He can play either point guard or shooting guard. The addition of Ben Walker to the

Qatari National Team forms an intriguing backcourt with Daoud Musa Daoud.

Daoud Mosa Daoud is considered one of the best guards in Asia and is sometimes called the Allen

Iverson of the Persian Gulf. Daoud possesses good court vision and passing ability. But scoring is definitely what he does best. His athleticism and height allow him to post smaller guards while he can also shoot from outside. With Yaseen Ismail, Daoud has been the leader of the National Team that competed for both the 1999 FIBA U19 World Championship and the 2001 FIBA U21 World

Abdullah also benefited for some good exposure with Al Rayyan and winning the Asian Club Championship twice in 2003 and 2005. Despite all the experience he gained over the past three seasons, it will be hard for him to see significant playing time this summer at the 2006 FIBA World Championship as the roster is already filled with a lot of talented forwards. Mohammed took advantage of the playing time he was offered to show his coach he was ready to assume a larger role. He averaged almost 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in 20 minutes per game. Erfan Ali Saeed is considered one of the most complete players for the Qatari team. He is able to play either outside or inside the paint. Despite a relative small height, Saeed is a very good rebounder but also a good passer. But his inability to shoot from beyond the arc is a major weakness. He started his career with the Qatari National Team last year at the 2005 FIBA Asia

Last December, he even established himself as the one of the most feared shooters in the Gulf region thanks to his performances at the West Asian Games. He made 10-for-13 from beyond the three-point arc to rack up 43 points in two consecutive games, helping Qatar to win the gold medal. But Ali Turki

Ali is above all a very complete player who can grab rebounds and dish out assists. Despite being only 2.00 metres, he is also one of the best shot blockers on the team. Even though he may be more comfortable at small forward, he can play power forward as well thanks to his skills and athleticism. Coach Joey Stiebing will probably count on him to be the team's sixth man.

Unluckily, Abdullah missed the West Asian Games last December after suffering a broken sternum after a collision during practice. His young brother Malek is also a member of the National Team.

Omer Abdgader Salem is one of the newcomers who made his debut for the National Team at the

2005 FIBA Asia Championship. He revealed himself as a very useful frontcourt reserve. Joey

Last December, he took advantage of Mohammed Saleem Abdullah’s absence at the West Asian Games to show his skills, averaging 6 points and 6 rebounds per game in 15 minutes.

Mohammed Salah Eidin’s height could help him to earn a spot to play in the 2006 FIBA World

Championship. He has not played yet for the Qatari National Team at the FIBA Asia Championship but had the opportunity to show his skills in the William Jones Cup. He is one of the tallest Qatari players along with Hashim Zaidan Zaidan. And if he continues to work and develop his game as he has over the past two years, he could be the next starting center of the National Team. But if any player in the frontcourt suffers an injury, the opportunity to shine at the best international level could come sooner than expected for him.

Hashim Zaidan Zaidan has been the big man on the Qatari National Team for five years. And he will be once again one of the biggest and above all the strongest players on the team despite being only 2.08 m. He finished third in rebounds (8.2) and was the top shot-blocker (2.8) at the

2001 FIBA U19 World Championship in Japan. In a 90-68 loss to Australia, he had dominated

David Andersen (2.12 m) and Luke Schenscher (2.13 m) by posting 10 points, shooting 4-for-4, with 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. He also competed at the Asian Club Championship and even won the 2003 edition with Al Rayyan. The following season, he moved onto Al Ahli, where he had started his career.

2005-06).

Like his countryman Ben Walker, Jabari Smith received a Qatari passport to join the National

Team. Coach Joey Stiebing can already count on athletic players but definitely lack some height.

Smith’s 2.11 metre frame provides tremendous help to the Qatari frontcourt. He is above all a defensive center with good rebounding and shot blocking skills. But he can also run the floor very well despite his height and score from the perimeter. He would also help his teammates thanks to his NBA experience. He played 115 games in the NBA, serving as a backup center for the

Sacramento Kings, Philadelphia Sixers and New Jersey Nets. With the addition of Jabari Smith, the Qatari National Team are a totally different team.
