Muhammad Ali was arguably the greatest heavyweight boxing champion. He won
the title on four occasions, and he loved to perform for the press. Also, he made up
saying and poems about himself and his opponents, he once said he would “ float like
a butterfly and sting like a bee.’’ Then, Ali announced that he would win each fight, he
even named the round. He became a Black Muslim, but he refused induction into the
armed service . However, he was convicted of a crime for having done so. As a result,
he lost his championship. Later the decision was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court,
and he won back the championship by defeating George Foreman in 1974. In 1978 he
lost it to Leon Spinks, but he regained it the next year. Although he retired in 1980, he
soon returned to the ring once more to fight for the championship, and he quite for
good.
