No. compulsory Master spring Face-to-face Title POLITINÄ– KINIJOS RAIDA Title in English POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHINA Subject annotation in English This course, through describing and analyzing the social transformation of China in the latest thirty years and its current features, will introduce students the unique traditional culture of China, as well as its economical structure, social system and political construction, and especially the interactions between them. The study forms are: lectures; discussions; readings and reports; instruction on important text readings; multimedia. There are five topics: 1. the historical background of contemporary Chinese reforms; 2. the dual structure of the social development in contemporary China; 3. the features of different stages in contemporary Chinese reforms and problems in the social transformations; 4. the logic of modern China’s political development, the features of different stages and the current problems; 5. the “Harmonious Society” and its future influence. Results: students will comprehend the basic knowledge of modern Chinese society, and will develop abilities to analyze Chinese political development from different angles. Necessary background knowledge for the study of the subject 1. Have taken course on contemporary Chinese history or any equivalent course, or have basic knowledge about Chinese culture. 2. Be able to read “China Daily” to know about the important political, economical and social events happening in China. 3. Have knowledge in political science and sociology; understand modernization and its relationship with political development, social transformation, and cultural conflicts. Study outcomes 1. Know the basic background of social and political development in modern China. 2. Understand the multi feature of contemporary Chinese society and its fundamental meaning. 3. Understand the logic of political development and current problems in modern China 4. Aquire the source collecting and analyzing skills. 5. Have an effective theoretical structure to observe China and can provide initiative analysis for relevant questions. 6. Trough the case study of China, broaden one’s understanding towards political development in general. Subject contents 1. Multi-structure of modern Chinese society and its historical background. 2. Reform as another revolution, and its historical meaning. 3. Features of different stages in Refrom and Opening and the the social transformation. 4. Structure of the political system of the Chinese style socialism. 5. Political development in the context of Reform and Opening. 6. Interactions between economy, politics and culture in the process of Reform and Opening. 7. “China’s miracle”: debate and meaning. 8. Problems of agriculture, country and persants in China. 9. Chinese economical development model and reform of national enterprises. 10. Devoloment of democracy in China. 11. Public policies. 12. Ideology of Chinese style socialism and cultural questions. 13. Methodology of researches on China. Study hours Lectures 30 hours, team work 15 hours, individual work 75 hours.
