Designing training courses for adult learners using
various didactic approaches
Competence
Autonomously designing learning events for adult learners in one’s
own professional field using various didactic approaches.
Proof of competence
Planning and conducting a training sequence and reflecting on it
Classification
The module ToT-FD-M5 «Designing training courses for adult
learners using various didactic approaches» is part of the modular
course that leads to admission to the central examination for
obtaining the title of «Trainer in Further Education with Federal PET
Diploma» (Level 2 of the modular system «Training of the Trainers»).
Providers
The providers of the modules must submit to a recognition procedure
by the Commission for Quality Assurance (CQA).
Prerequisites
As a rule module ToT-FD-M1, resp. «SVEB/FSEA Certificate » as
well as practical experience in conducting learning events with adults
are required.
Competencies

Designing learning events in one’s own professional field
according to principles of adult learning, using and accounting for
various didactic approaches based on course concepts and
analyses of the participants and considering the subject area and
the professional environment
§
Making targeted use of various forms of teaching and learning
and teaching aids
§
Shaping learning activities and the social interaction in the
learning groups in such a manner that they are conducive to the
learning processes
§
Finding appropriate methodological solutions for complex
teaching and learning situations
§
Designing appropriate instruments to promote transfer and to
assess learning outcomes and carry out evaluations
§
Selecting and applying evaluation methods and tools for one’s
own learning events, which are consistent with the evaluation
concept of the organisation
§
Reflecting on one’s own behaviour and consciously shaping
one’s role, when conducting learning events

Learning contents
Learning time
The course contents listed below are to be seen as guidelines for the
module providers (cf. the list of competencies and resources (Co-Re)
for the module). The providers can weight contents and/or provide
specific complementary contents.

Analysis of the participant group

Theories of learning, principles of adult learning and didactic
models
§
One’s own understanding of teaching and learning
§
Didactic principles of the subject area and of the professional
environment
§
Didactic design of complex learning events: objectives, selection
of contents, forms of learning as well as teaching aids
§
Differentiating and individualising forms of teaching and learning;
organisational provisions for promoting autonomous learning and
personal responsibility
§
Forms of internet-supported learning
§
Diversity in connection with the didactic and methodological
design
§
Typical group dynamic processes and their consequences for
didactic design
§
Methods and tools for the evaluation of learning processes and
the assessment of the learning outcomes
§
Reflection on the role of the trainer in various forms of teaching
and learning
Minimal periods of time:
§
41 h net course time (39 h in the course, plus at least 1 h practice
observation and at least 1 h meeting and discussion with the
trainer of the module about the observation within the context of
the proof of competence)
§
90 h self-study
For approximately 50% of the self-study time, guidance is provided
by the trainers of the module.
This self-study time can be used for example for further reading,
regular individual reflection and work for the proof of competence of
the module.
The module is equivalent to 4.5 ECTS credit points.
Supervision
ToT-FD-M5
The group supervision required for admission to the central
examination can be completed within the context of this module or
module ToT-FD-M4.

The group supervision comprises at least 16 net attendance hours,
divided over at least 5 sessions. Further information and guidelines
can be found in a special information leaflet «Supervision» (see
www.alice.ch).
The supervision is equivalent to 1 ECTS credit point.
Requirements for the
proof of competence
The proof of competence for this module consists of a practice
observation, as a rule, by the trainer of the module, with evaluation of
planning, execution and reflection.
The practice observation usually takes place in the work environment
of the trainer. The observed learning unit is part of a learning event in
a group of at least three adults.
Prior to the practice observation the following materials should be
presented to the trainer of the module:

Description of the learning group
§
Explanation of how the learning unit to be observed fits into the
wider context of the entire training offer
§
Commentary to the planning of the learning unit to be observed
After the practice observation, a meeting and discussion with the
trainer about the unit takes place. In addition, the candidate must
write a reflection about the observed learning unit.
Evaluation criteria
The proof of competence is evaluated according to the following
criteria:

The requirements were observed.
§
The didactic planning is geared to the defined competencies and
the resources to be developed.
§
The learning contents, the amount of subject matter and the
progression are geared to the needs of the specific group of
participants.
§
The methods, learning modalities and teaching aids are geared to
the needs of adults and promote active and autonomous learning.
§
The transfer of learning is supported with adequate means and
tools.

Execution
§
The following abilities and attitudes were evident during the
execution of the learning unit:
o
appreciative and respectful attitude towards all participants
o
confident shaping of roles in conducting and moderating the
group
o
confidence in the methodological execution of the planning
o
interventions adequate to the situation in conducting the
group of learners
o
ability to adapt the planning and one’s own role to the specific
situation.
Reflection
§
The candidate can justify his/her didactic and methodological
choices.
§
He/she can reflect critically and take adequate measures on the
basis of the reflections.
The result of the evaluation is «passed» or «failed». The proof of
competence is awarded when all criteria have at least been met in
their essential parts.
The evaluation of the proof of competence is issued in writing by the
trainer of the module according to the evaluation criteria and is
comprehensible for outsiders.
Rights of appeal
and repetition
Against the evaluation «failed» the candidate can appeal in writing to
the provider of the module within 30 days stating the reasons for the
objection.
The provider of the module decides
a) to accept the objection (proof of competence awarded)
b) to allow for repetition
c) to reject the objection.
The candidate has the right to appeal in writing against the decision
of the module provider to the CQA within 30 days. The CQA
examines whether the procedure was formally correct. The appeal is
free of charge.

Module certificate
To obtain the module certificate the following requirements must be
met:
1. Active participation during course attendance (80%)
2. Active participation in group supervision (at least 80%) in case
this supervision is offered in the context of this module
3. A proof of competence evaluated with «passed» by the trainer of
the module
The module certificate is one of the preconditions for admission to
the central examination for obtaining the title «Trainer in Further
Education with Swiss Federal Certificate». It has a validity of five
years from the date of issue for admission to the central
examination.
Central Evaluation
The module provider gives the candidates who have successfully
completed the module a copy of the relevant proof of competence
and its evaluation by the trainer of the module.
Please note: successful candidates must keep these documents in a
secure manner, since they will be required by the SVEB/FSEA Bureau
for the central evaluation (Federal PET Diploma Examination).
