IBM and Emerson Network Power have partnered to provide an industry-leading solution for Data
Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM). The coupling of IBM’s IT Service Management and
Emerson Network Power’s infrastructure management capabilities provides a complete DCIM solution,
allowing IT and facilities professionals to manage data centers more effectively and efficiently.
The DCIM solution consists of:

IBM® SmartCloud™ Control Desk provides a common control center for managing
business processes for both digital and physical assets. It gives you an efficient service desk
for handling service requests and managing incidents; it offers advanced impact analysis
and automated change procedures designed to reduce risk and support integrity of services;
and it also provides inventory management and software license compliance capabilities. It
helps to manage assets throughout their lifecycle, optimizing usage of digital and physical
assets and minimizing compliance risks.

Emerson Trellis™ Platform offers real-time visibility into the entire data center
infrastructure, providing context for all of the information collected so that data centers
gain an accurate understanding of performance. It gathers and aggregates millions of
data points from infrastructure devices, filtering and presenting relevant and meaningful
data in ways best suited to the individual data center user. It provides accurate, realtime information on inventory, energy consumption and infrastructure dependencies. It
is modular, scalable and built to manage all IT and facilities resources in an efficient
manner.

IBM® Tivoli® Netcool®/OMNIbus delivers near real-time, consolidated event management
across business infrastructure, data centers, complex networks and IT domains. The
software provides full management and automation to help you deliver continuous uptime of
business services and applications.
Visualize changes before they occur
Model the data center based upon available capacity
Combining the capabilities provided by Emerson Trellis platform with IBM Tivoli’s asset and service
management, event management, monitoring, and business service management capabilities
provides our customers a complete framework for managing the whole data center.
The intelligent, actionable information provided by this combination of IT operations and facility
management solutions results in immediate benefits such as: automation of tasks and planning that
frees up personnel time; aggregated alerts and events that lead to quicker actions to preserve uptime;
granular energy management that results in operational cost reductions; better measurement of
performance that creates more reliable services to customers; and visibility into capacity utilization and
future demand that allows confident consolidation and expansion planning thereby yielding lower
capital outlays.
How it works
The DCIM solution integrates the infrastructure management and hardware planning capabilities of
Emerson Trellis platform with the asset management and work order capabilities of SmartCloud
Control Desk and the event correlation and automation provided by OMNIbus. You can automate
activities across IT and facilities when new IT resources are requested, from purchasing the equipment
to provisioning power, cooling and rack space all the way to deploying the asset. With Emerson Trellis
platform monitoring data center infrastructure components, any alarms generated are sent to
OMNIBus for correlation with alarms from IT and other equipment, which then results in the automatic
creation of trouble tickets or work orders in SmartCloud Control Desk.
Why IBM?
IBM provides end-to-end asset and facilities management for both IT and non-IT assets in all
enterprise facilities including the data center. The DCIM solution monitors, collects and analyzes realtime, continuous, accurate information from an intelligent infrastructure allowing for immediate action.
It enables a common platform for all interdependent systems across IT and facility infrastructures and
is designed to keep the data center in an optimal state of balance among availability, efficiency and
capacity. It helps customers with increasing energy and operational efficiency, while reducing costs
and downtime risk.
