Unitec accepts academic IELTS and its equivalents, including NCEA
English credits from NZ secondary school and TOEFL tests.

birth and residency as entered on this enrolment will be included
in the National Student Index, and will be used in an Authorised

Guidelines for Credit recognition / Cross-credits
Please note:
The maximum credits ever granted is half a programme, but the actual credits granted will vary according to individual
assessment, as credits are based on how similar your previous courses are to Unitec’s courses.
If you want to apply for cross-credits, you need to:
» Obtain detailed course descriptions (in English) from the previous institution you studied at
» Complete the Application for Credit Recognition/Cross-credits (online or in the International Prospectus)
» Please apply for credits at least two months before the semester begins; do not leave it too late as the process can take
2-3 months, and credits approved more than two weeks after the semester begins will not affect your enrolment (ie you will
not be able to withdraw from the courses or apply for a refund due to the credits). Credit applications received less than two
months before the semester begins may not be assessed in time, and applications received less than one month in advance
will not be assessed in time.
Note: If the previous qualification is from New Zealand – Please take these items to any Student Central office on campus. (If you are in your
final semester, bring your results so far, plus confirmation of the courses you are currently enrolled in. Provisional assessment can be made on
this basis; your final results will be required to confirm any credits provisionally granted.)
If the previous qualification is from a country other than New Zealand – Please apply through the International Office; email the credit
application form and course outlines as pdf or Word documents if possible as this allows faster assessment than hard copies.
STEP 1: CHECKLIST
Please complete and sign the SAF005 form and attach the following documents**
1. Verified true copy of academic record stating grades achieved and/or NZQA record of learning (do not send original documents)
2. Prescription/course outline/full course descriptor for each course you wish to transfer credit from and where applicable:
3. Verified and translated to English a true copy of degree/diploma certificate for completed qualifications
4. Details of applicable work experience (eg for Nursing where regulations allow for credit on the basis of supervised practice following registration)
5. Verified true copy of related qualifications and details of any additional relevant courses completed
** Where a verified/attested/certified copy is referred to above, you must provide a copy of each document certified by a Justice of the Peace, Solicitor or authorised
Unitec agent with the following statement “I have sighted the original of this document and confirm that this is a true copy”.
