Introduction

The DC Motor Controller enables either one or two motors to be switched on/off and forward/reverse using digital inputs. The following tables show the logic signals needed at pins 1 - 4 on the board to control two motors, A and B.

Interfacing the DC Motor Controller:

Stamp Microcontroller, Bit by Bit Controller, Smartcard Reader etc.

1. Separate the 10 core ribbon cable into one block of six wires, and two pairs of wires.

2. Use the two pairs of wires to connect the two motors to the pcb via the terminal blocks. The DC motors do not require suppressing with capacitors under normal use.

3. Connect the AA battery box (motor power supply) to the pcb via the terminal blocks.

4. Use the six core wire to connect the four pcb input lines to the DIGITAL LOGIC outputs from the controller. Note that the motor pcb 5V and 0V lines must also be connected to the controller power supply (the 5V line may be connected to the 6V “V+” line on the Bit by Bit Controller).

Notes:

1.

The motor power supply can be from 3V to 12V DC. The actual voltage ‘seen’ by the motor is 1.5V

lower than the supply, and so if

4.5V (3xAA cells) are used the motor voltage will be 3V.

2.

The motor driver chip will become warm with use. This is NORMAL and does not indicate a fault. The chip actually contains a thermal fuse and so will automatically cut out if it does overheat, although this is unlikely to occur with low power DC motors. Once the chip cools if will reset.

3.

The motor may still spin if the motor supply is not connected

(i.e. just the logic supply is connected) due to leakage current via the input lines. Although this causes no harm to either module it will drain the logic supply very rapidly and so this condition should be avoided.

Supplementary Connection Instructions for Bit by Bit Controller

Bit by Bit Controller

1. Separate the 10 core ribbon cable into one block of six wires, and two pairs of wires.

2. Use the two pairs of wires to connect the two motors to the pcb via the terminal blocks (marked pair A and pair B). The motors do NOT require suppressing with capacitors under normal use.

3. Connect the AA battery box (motor power supply) to the pcb via the terminal blocks. Red wire to V+, black wire to 0V.

4. Use the six core cable to connect the motor controller to the LOGIC outputs on the bit by bit controller. Connect the wires as follows:

5. The bit by bit controller OPTIONAL resistors, transistors and relays are NOT required.

6. Connect the motor batteries, the bit by bit batteries and then switch the

‘program’ switch on the bit by bit controller to the ‘PROG ON’ position.

7. Switch the data DIP switch 1 on. Motor A should spin forwards. Switch DIP switch 1 off.

8. Switch the data DIP switch 2 on. Motor A should spin backwards. Switch DIP switch 2 off.

9. Switch the data DIP switch 3 on. Motor B should spin forwards. Switch DIP switch 3 off.

10. Switch the data DIP switch 4 on. Motor B should spin backwards. Switch DIP switch 4 off.

General Notes:

1. The motor power supply can be from 3V to 12V DC. The actual voltage ‘seen’ by the motor is 1.5V lower than the supply, and so if 4.5V (3xAA cells) are used the motor voltage will be 3V.

2. The motor driver chip will become warm with use. This is NORMAL and does not indicate a fault. The chip actually contains a thermal fuse and so will automatically cut out if it does overheat, although this is unlikely to occur with low power DC motors. Once the chip cools if will reset.

3. The motor may still spin if the motor supply is not connected (i.e. just the controller logic supply is connected) due to leakage current via the input lines.

Supplementary Connection Instructions for Smartcard Reader

Smartcard Reader

1. Separate the 10 core ribbon cable into one block of six wires, and two pairs of wires.

2. Use the two pairs of wires to connect the two motors to the pcb via the terminal blocks (marked pair A and pair B). The motors do NOT require suppressing with capacitors under normal use.

3. Connect the AA battery box (motor power supply) to the pcb via the terminal blocks. Red wire to V+, black wire to 0V.

4. Use the six core cable to connect the motor controller to the smartcard reader.

Note that on the smartcard reader the connections are made to the LOGIC outputs (between the two chips) and NOT to the open-collector outputs

(below the LEDs). Connect the wires as follows:

5. If desired the 10 pin header supplied in the kit can be cut down to 8 pins and soldered in the ‘logic output’ pcb holes. The wires can then be easily soldered to the pins instead of directly to the pcb.

6. Program a smartcard with the following seven line program:

00 high 1

01 wait 10

02 low 1

03 high 2

04 wait 10

05 low 2

06 goto 00

7. Connect the motor batteries, the smartcard reader batteries and then insert the smartcard.

8. Motor A should spin backwards and forwards. Modify the program to use outputs 3 and 4 to test motor B. Naturally the two motor connections can be swapped to reverse motor operation.
