コースの概要(がいよう)
:
このコースは日本語学習者(がくしゅうしゃ)の日本語の聴解(ちょうかい)能力(のう
りょく)とコミュニケーション能力の向上(こうじょう)を目的(もくてき)にしていま
す。教材(きょうざい)として DMA, Contemporary Japanese と日本テレビドラマ「お
金がない」を使用(しよう)します。
小テストでは、聴解(ちょうかい)、ロールプレイ、インタビュ-などが予定(よてい)さ
れています。
Course objectives:
Japanese 321 (Advanced Japanese Discourse) is designed to help students improve
their ability to convey their intended meaning and to understand native speakers’
speech including cultural connotations.
(1) The video #1 & #2 + FNN news + Contemporary Japanese #6 are used to help
students comprehend stories narrated in an oral mode, summarize the content
and express their opinions on various issues in Japanese.
(2) The role playing activities are designed to help students handle daily
communicative situations in culturally appropriate manners.
(3) The class activities with native speakers of Japanese are designed to improve
students’ ability to convey their intended meaning in Japanese at extended
discourse.
(4) The purposes of using a TV drama, No Money, are: 1. to help students enhance
their understanding of Japanese cultural aspects observed in a contemporary
business world, through characters’ speech patterns, paralinguistic/ nonlinguistic behaviors, 2. to help students improve their comprehension skills of
natural conversation, and 3. to help them improve their narrative skills.
Learning outcomes:
1. Students will be able to comprehend authentic news which handle daily
situations , to summarize the content and to express their opinions on various
issues in Japanese.
2. Students will be able to handle daily communicative situations orally in
culturally appropriate manners.
3. Students will be able to convey their intended meaning in Japanese at extended
discourse.
4. Students will be able to understand Japanese cultural aspects observed in a
contemporary Japanese business world.
5. Students will be able to comprehend authentic TV dramas which handle daily
communicative situations.
*The regularly scheduled quizzes include: 1. Individual interview= to present one’s own
opinion at extended discourse, 2. Role playing, and 3. Listening comprehension.
*Please make sure to check the announcements of quizzes and homework assignments
as well as the review files posted on the Blackboard.
COURSE POLICIES:
a) Academic Integrity: Cheating and plagiarism (using as one’s own ideas, writings or
materials of someone else without acknowledgement or permission) can result in any one
of a variety of sanctions. Such penalties may range from an adjusted grade on the particular
exam, paper, project, or assignment to a failing grade in the course. The instructor may also
summarily suspend the student for the class meeting when the infraction occurs, as well as
the following class meeting.
b) Electric Devices: Please make sure that you are not allowed to place any digital gadget
on the desk during the exam/quiz. If any electric devices are found during the exam/quiz,
your score will be zero. Should a violation of this policy occur after a warning, you will be
asked to leave.
c) Attendance Policy
Each time you miss a class, you will lose 5 points of your attendance, and if you miss
20% of all the classes, you will lose the total score allotted to attendance. Late class
arrival 10 minutes or more, three times, is considered as one day’s absence. Be aware of
the direct relationship between daily work and attendance and your success in language
training. If you know in advance that you will be either late or absent for a class, be
certain to e-mail or call the instructor.
d) Assignments
Assignments should be handed in to the instructor before the class starts, and they
will be graded with full score. If you turn in your assignments more than 5 minutes late
after the class starts will be graded as a late assignments. Late assignments will be
accepted only one class day after the due date. These late assignments will receive half
credit. More assignments (than the ones indicated on the tentative schedule below) will
be given in each class. Being absent or coming in late to the class for any reason do not
exempt you from the above policies.
e) Participation
Attending class, submitting homework assignments, and taking tests do not
necessarily mean you are participating in class. Students are expected to participate in
all the classroom activities in a positive and attentive manner. Your participation in every
class is evaluated. Usage of Japanese language in class will be expected except in
emergency cases.
f) E-mail/Blackboard/Moodle
You are required to check the Blackboard for the announcements every day.
Pay attention to the information from the instructor relate to the course work.
g) CR/NC Option
For those who choose the CR/NC option, C performance is the minimum basis for a
grade of CR.
