This paper argues for a sociological approach to Greek law that focuses on the incentives created
by legal rules and institutions. Lanni explores two potentially fruitful methods in current legal
sociology—law and economics and social norms theory—and provides an example applying
each of these methods to explain aspects of Athenian legal enforcement.
