Americans are welcome again in Europe. Despite an
economic avalanche at home that has resulted in a
domino-effect of disasters around the world, the Obama
election has reinvigorated faith in the American Dream.
From the world's political elite to the most humble citizens
of the poorest countries we have bought Obama's
message of change and hope - in bulk. However, we
must remain aware that while the domestic agenda
dominates his arrival in office, any plan for recovery will
also inevitably affect other countries through its policies
on immigration, regulation, trade and protection to name
but a few. As an engine of the global economy, recovery
for America can mean recovery for the world whereas a
short-termist view at home will mean an even bleaker

long-term prospect for others. The biggest challenge for
the new Administration will be to provide the necessary
reassurance to prevent America from turning in on itself
just as the world is once more willing to engage.

is currently the Keller Fellow of Transatlantic Studies at
Yale University. Prior to coming home to the U.S. last
year, she lived in the United Kingdom for over 20 years
working primarily in politics and strategic
communications. This included 10 years working for the
Liberal Democrats in the Leader's Office and as General
Election Campaign Manager of the 1992 and 1997
campaigns, 3 years at the BBC, 2 years with a major
PR/lobbying firm and 3 years running BritishAmerican
Business, the largest transatlantic business membership
organization. She was also speechwriter to the current
U.S. Ambassador to the UK and a Fellow at Oxford
University. Her forthcoming book, The Third Way:
Globalization's Legacy is due out this spring.
