Technology Fee Subcommittee
Priorities

Academic Computer Center (ongoing commitment)
o Continue funding of the ACC and Specialized Satellite Labs, look at additional
features that would enhance the student experience within the general lab
environment.
o Continue the comprehensive machine cycle to keep technology movement
between labs and other student areas up to date.
o Look at extending Specialized Satellite Labs coverage to additional areas, with
tier equipment.

Network Infrastructure (ongoing commitment)
o Increase security and performance of networking infrastructure including wireless
technology.
o Implement a comprehensive Network Infrastructure replacement cycle.
o Look towards new higher speed networking for high volume areas.
o Continue to increase network bandwidth for Internet and Internet 2 access.
o Provide better controls and monitoring systems to protect student computers
from viruses, worms, spam and hacking.

Core Technology Services (ongoing commitment)
o Continue to provide reliable MavMail service and enhance capabilities for
students
o Increase MavMAIL e-mail storage for students.
o Continue to improve MavDISK and enhance capabilities for student
o Secure printing while controlling waste and printing costs and expand printer
availability

Classroom Technology (ongoing commitment)
o Implement a consistent maintenance and replacement cycle for classroom
multimedia presentation equipment
o Continue equipping classrooms and labs with devices that enhance instruction,
student learning, and the development of technology skills.
o Continue integrating emerging instructional technologies into the curriculum.
o Provide adequate resources for the ongoing service and support necessary to
sustain reliable classroom operations
o Provide continuous training opportunities for students and faculty the use of
classroom technologies.
o Expanded support and service of CSU presentation systems

Instructional Management Software (IMS)
o Maintain and enhance instructional management software
o Assist faculty & students transition to the new campus-approved instructional
management system (Desire2Learn).
o Provide continuous training opportunities for students and faculty on using IMS
o
Provide adequate resources for the ongoing service and support of IMS users
including hardware and software for producing course materials

Technology Orientation/Communication (ongoing commitment)
o Provide information about MSU Technology and IT Initiatives for all students.
 In forums such as FYE Orientation, open houses, information tables in
CSU, etc.
 Start off all new students on MSU Web Portal

Student Study Areas
o Continue to redesign and equip heavily used student study areas to make the
space more technologically useable.
o Continue installing power and mobile communications support.
o Continue designing space to improve both collaboration for group study and
comfort for individual study.
o Possible areas for improvement:
 Outside Academic Computing Center
 Areas within the remodeled CSU
 General Areas within the residential halls

MSU Portal (ongoing commitment)
o Integrate a collaboration application that supports extensive functionality:
 Webmail, calendaring, collaboration and file sharing.
 Create communication and information delivery system
 Provide one site for login access to Instructional Management System
and other campus systems.
 Enhance e-commerce features to improve convenience and availability.
 Provide a direct link to registration and the DARS system.
o Provide customizable features to allow personal selection of information (news,
weather, sports, etc.)
o Implement a campus-wide events calendar
o Continue to move campus resources to the portal

New Technology Initiatives
o Provide a funding opportunity for new technology ideas
o Establish a Technology Fee grant process to encourage innovative ideas fund
these ideas

Support for the Distance Learner
o Provide non-campus based students with technology and support to meet their
needs not covered by existing services as demand requires

Continued support for Library computing
o Provide more laptops for checkout to students
o Add more workstations in the library with continued emphasis on creative seating
and study spaces
