Course Description for the Catalog: EDMG 4406 Methods & Management in the Middle Grades (3-9-6): Field Experience and Seminar – Taken with two content area methods courses, this course includes an intensive and extensive field experience in a middle school. Candidates will be required to spend up to four hours per day, four days per week in their placement. Candidates must have a satisfactory field experience to continue on to student teaching. Proof of professional liability insurance and a criminal background check is required prior to receiving a school placement. this course also includes a once-a-week seminar to be held on campus to address topics such as middle grades classroom management and the middle grades concept and philosophy. Pre-requisite: EDMG 3300. Co-requisite: Two of EDMG 4401, 4402, 4403, and/or 4404. II. Justification for Course A. Explain assessment findings which led to course development. This field experience and seminar parallels the existing field experience required for middle grades education majors during their TOSS (Teaching of Specific Subjects) block, which consists of two methods courses and EDMG 4405 Curriculum and Instruction in the Middle Grades. Currently, candidates participate in the field experience and their grade is embedded into their final grades for their two methods courses and EDMG 4405. Candidates cannot pass the TOSS block if they do not have a successful field experience. It has been the faculty's experience that some candidates do well on campus, but struggle in the field. With an unsuccessful field experience, they have no choice but to repeat all the courses in the TOSS block. The creation of this course separates it from the other TOSS courses, facilitating its evaluation with grades representative of the quality of performance in the field. In addition, the seminar component of this course will address objectives previously in EDUC 3308 Learning, Motivation, and Classroom Management. (EDUC 3308 will be discontinued as of fall 2007 in response to BOR mandates.) Classroom management objectives will be addressed while candidates 1 Form updated Spring 2006. have a field placement in a middle grades classroom, thus placing the knowledge and skills in powerful context.
