Proposed Information Course Prefix and Number: EDMG 3300 Course Title: Success in the Middle: Teaching, Learning, and Advocacy Credit Hours (format should be # - # - #): 3 - 0 - 3 Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education (Prerequisites are courses or requirements that non-negotiable and must be successfully completed by any student before enrolling in the course or program under consideration. Corequisites are courses that can be taken before or in the same semester as the course under consideration. Courses at the upper-division level will require lower-division competencies or prerequisites.) Course Description for the Catalog: Candidates will focus on the development of middle school curriculum and instructional and assessment activities that relate to early adolescents, with an emphasis on the attributes of the middle school philosophy. Candidates will also examine the issues of teaching young adolescents and the unique role teachers must play as interdisciplinary team members, content specialists, as well as advocates for the middle school and the middle level learner. Candidates will further examine issues related to diversity including, but not limited to, ethnicity, race, age, socioeconomic status, gender, giftedness, disability, language, religion, family structure, sexual orientation, and geographic region. Information from current research and exemplary practitioners will be used to extend candidate knowledge on special topics related to social, emotional, and physical development as it relates to the curricula. II. Justification for Course A. Explain assessment findings which led to course development. With the BOR addition of three new Area F courses, thus the elimination of EDUC 2202, it became evident that candidates seeking middle grades and secondary certification would need more instruction in adolescent development and the middle school concept. This course is based on SPA standards that were no longer part of the program once EDUC 2202 and EDUC 3308 were eliminated. B. Explain for Prerequisites: 1. It is to be taken after admission to teacher education and before TOSS. B. What efforts have been made to ensure that this course does not duplicate the content of other college courses with similar titles, purposes, or content? In light of the new Area F courses a review and redesign committee reviewed all of the current requirements for the major in Middle Grades Education and aligned each experience with state and national standards. This course was designed to meet standards that were not addressed elsewhere in the program. C. Where will the course be located in the program (elective, required in Area F, required or elective for the major)? Indicate and justify its placement in the curriculum. Upper Division Major Requirements. This course is for MGE and Secondary majors only. It expands on some of the topics introduced in the new Area F courses and further investigates adolescent development and lesson planning, which are both essential to becoming an effective teacher.
