Course Description for the Catalog:
Candidates will focus on the development of middle school curriculum and instructional and assessment
activities that relate to early adolescents, with an emphasis on the attributes of the middle school
philosophy. Candidates will also examine the issues of teaching young adolescents and the unique role
teachers must play as interdisciplinary team members, content specialists, as well as advocates for the
middle school and the middle level learner. Candidates will further examine issues related to diversity
including, but not limited to, ethnicity, race, age, socioeconomic status, gender, giftedness, disability,
language, religion, family structure, sexual orientation, and geographic region. Information from current
research and exemplary practitioners will be used to extend candidate knowledge on special topics
related to social, emotional, and physical development as it relates to the curricula.
II. Justification for Course
A. Explain assessment findings which led to course development.
With the BOR addition of three new Area F courses, thus the elimination of EDUC 2202, it became
evident that candidates seeking middle grades and secondary certification would need more instruction in
adolescent development and the middle school concept. This course is based on SPA standards that
were no longer part of the program once EDUC 2202 and EDUC 3308 were eliminated.

national standards. This course was designed to meet standards that were not addressed elsewhere in
the program.
C. Where will the course be located in the program (elective, required in Area F, required or
elective for the major)? Indicate and justify its placement in the curriculum.
