Sense of professionalism. Broad knowledge of strategies for teaching and reading. Very coachable and enthusiastic about joining in, ready to be of service to the students and wanting to do a good job, and there is a good quantitive pool of education majors. Flexibility and curriculum. They know the subject matter. The teachers I have personally hired have entered the profession with a strong skill set. Knowledge of technology use Q2 Knowledge of the KY standards - real barrier to hiring APSU graduates. Knowledge of Randy Sprick's work on discipline. Content Knowledge Hands on strategies to teach math; making adjustments to instruction based assessments. Common core knowledge is needed, indicating to students when they are being expected to think at a higher level and what that entails; Teachers able and ready to demonstrate the daily practice of explicit and direct instruction; student teachers who are less timid and more assertive about being professionally capable and ready. Ability to understand standards and to differentiate for learners. The process of reading instructions Confidentiality and integrity - This is rare, but still occurs (i.e. Facebook posts, pictures, inappropriate language, etc.; also gossiping about schools, teachers, admin after field experience placements/student teaching) Q3 Knowledge of the KY standards - real barrier to hiring APSU graduates. Knowledge of Randy Sprick's work on discipline. More emphasis on balanced assessment, backwards planning and content knowledge. We have found teachers struggle with diagnostic small group reading instructions and how to teach math for understanding. Dealing with the practical aspects of the day to day nuts and bolts of being a teacher. Help students understand teaching is hard work, requires many extra hours, and requires organization. More training would be beneficial in communicating student progress to all stakeholders. Stepping ahead to total integration of common core and higher level thinking; readiness to create aligned assessments rather than relying on textbook assessments; familiarity with checks for understanding and small group instruction. I think the extended time and partnering with the classroom teacher will help. If weak candidates are in the program be more intentional in helping them exit. Continue partnership with CMCSS to prepare teachers. Continue to focus on research - based best practices and monitoring progress of students/differentiation of instruction. Q4 More training on G+I traits writing instruction, hierarchy of reading skills- reading instruction developing number sense. Training on Easy IEP, used across TN for special ed students. Training on TEAM- the new evaluation system. Q5 Any time in school setting is beneficial. Definitely a plus for the program. The more future teachers spend in a classroom, the better understanding they will have of the realities of teaching. This is wonderful! The real time exposure to the students and the daily classroom occurrences is invaluable. They become more experienced with realistic expectations and preparations such as learning explicit and direct instruction techniques. More efficacies occur between the APSU student and the classroom teacher.
